Although that may be true that wasn't the why organic matter was suggested. Unless it's only forest plants that die without some source of nutrition.

What Does Organic Matter Do In Soil?

I grow Makisupa (Magenta colored fruit) self pollinating and have the bottoms throw up not runners but eyes I suppose, not far from the buried stem. I let them ramble up the pecan tree if they don't wither, sometimes they just wither too much water against the growing eye I suppose in some cases. Other cases I let them grow then cut them off and repot or offer cuttings for sale or trade. Got plenty right now 15-18 inch cuttings.
