Dwarf Cavendish North of 49°
Around here, most outdoor bananas are cold-hardy, but I've grown Dwarf Cavendish for over 10 years. In fact they're so prolific that I sell them at our neighborhood 'yearly' garage sale. Yes, in this (west coast) climate they have to come indoors for the winter in October, but they do fine after being rolled outside again in June.
Because they're in containers, I'm wondering if there's a big need to keep upsizing the containers to encourage them to set fruit. It seems that here, Dwarf Cavendish take ~3 years to do that. The site looks like it's a rich source of information and I'm looking forward to exploring more thoroughly in the future. BTW, what's the striped variegated banana on the welcome page? Not variegated leaves, but the fruit itself - a very attractive banana. |

Good question, I am in pretty much the same situation, sdc's and others. I have some in 30 gal containers and some in smaller, over winter it seems those in a smaller planters do better? course I'm in zone 6, so no help here.
