Going Bananas in Washington State

Although I have been a member of this forum for years I have yet to post so here goes it.

My Aunt gave me a banana and I have had it for a number of years.
Although it was one now it is several. I dump all my coffee grounds,
egg shells, and any other raw vegetable matter I have including their leaves from last year. They seem to love it. They are already at least 10 feet tall but they have never bloomed. I am hoping they will this year. I just started heavily fertilizing them with miracle grow.

Anyone know what kind they are and if they are edible?

Just wanted to let you know I am also in WA state and grow bananas. Are those Basjoo's and do you leave them in the ground all year? How do you protect them in the winter? I have all mine in pots and put them in the garage in the winter.

Welcome Kelso - I Live in Connecticut and have had Orinoco flower and fruit in only 2 years, so have hope!!! I did dig the Pstem out and replant in the spring.

I don't know what they are but they get really big every year.

The guy at the local garden shop told me to put super phosphorus on them and I just did. I also fertilized heavily too. He said the super phosphorus will make them bloom but to only do it a couple of times during their growing cycle. I will have to go back and ask him about that as I was getting info on all kinds of different plants. Information overload....LOLOL.

Yes I just leave them in the ground I didn't know you were suppose to did them up and take them in that would be a lot of work since there are ten of them. The garden guy also told me to cut back a few but that just seems cruel. So I just won't let any new ones come up.

They would be easier to identify if you have a picture of the bananas and male bud. Until then you can't know for sure. Good luck on getting a bloom!

I actually dump all my coffee grounds, egg shells, any compost-able material, grass, wood ashes etc. on them and I didn't do anything to winter them. There are ten and I left the leaves on so I think all the leaves acted as insulation too.
