Hello
Hello All, I'm new to Bananas.org,
I Love tropical Islands, but I live in the city so it's my plan to have my city yard to look like an oasis. How can I do that without a few Banana trees. That's another reason I'm here,is to learn all I can about grown and caring for Banana tress, plants. And also hopefully one day to some swapping. Happy Gardening. |

Re: Hello
Welcome to the organization missg!!!
It can be a real fun and rewarding project making a city Oasis. Soil prep is a first step. Shade and Sun considerations are important, then of course weather. Give us some specifics and we will be glad to provide information! Once again wecome to the organization! |

Re: Hello
Thank you all for the warn welcome. I looking forward to learning and sharing, with you all.
Just to tell a little about my yard. I have full sun most of the day, about 2 PM then the sun is not as hot. I have done a lot of container garden, and was bring things in for the winter, because of space I'm going to start to plant, some things in the ground that can take the cold. I have tried to grow Banana from seeds, " I did not do good at all". But I will try & try again & again. I live in Philadelphia Pa. for the most part our winters are not to bad. Re: Hello
Hey Gale you should have no trouble getting a nice look in Philly. Check out Saltydads photo section. I think he's down closer to you than I am. Youd be surprised what a difference just a few degrees warmer can make. The most experienced among us (I'm not one) have trouble with bananas from seed , so don't be discouraged. A few M. Basjoo and Red and green castor beans (as a large anual) maybe a potted Alocasia(one of the Giant size), Voila you've got the tropics in PA. If you want to get really crazy, try a Needle palm(Rhapidophylum Histrix) , A decent sized one will be costly but they'd be totally hardy in your area and I bet no one on your block has one. I saw some established ones up here totally unprotected after it got to -4 and they were fine.

Re: Hello
Hammer, Thanks for you warm welcome
Bob, So Far I have the Green, Red Castor Beans I have been growing them for the last 3 summers. I also Have a number of the Large Elephant Ears. I going to look into the Needle Palm, that's a bet if I do not have to bring them in for the winter. Last year will be my first year for the M. Basjoo, I hoping that will come back this year. But if not I did order 3 more from a coop. Thank you for the infor very helpful Gale |

Re: Hello
Welcome to the org! You'll have no trouble selecting for the tropical look with some research, and it sounds like you're already started. Bob- thanks for the referral.
