![]() I am locaded in the USA and I live in Missouri zone 6. I forgot to mention I have a water banana that grows in one of my water gardens. I have 11 water gardens. I have many tropical water lilies and tropical water plants. Right now the water banana is in my basement for the winter and it is in water. I am pretty sure a banana can be trained to grow in water like a canna. I got it at a big greenhouse in the spring of 2007. It has survied all that winter and was put outside in the watergarden in the summer of 2008. It is alive in the water in the basement. I was told it was Dwarf Cavendish. I need to learn how to post pictures. My pictures are in photo bucket. So how do I post from there

![]() Glad you joined us Vickie. Very impressive collection. I was surprised to see the 'water banana'. It isn't 'supposed' to grow like that according to the experts. Pretty cool that it's working for you. It appears to be liking it. Welcome to Bananas.org!
As to the soil preferences for AeAe, no one seems to be sure, but one of our members grows them in Florida and swears that alkaline soil is the way to grow. There is conflicting expert testimony here, so I would tend to keep them close to a pH of 7 and gradually see how they respond for you one way or the other. One thing I do know for certain is that if they become too white, add more nitrogen to your fertilizing regime. If there isn't enough white, reduce the nitrogen percentage slightly. They don't seem to do well here in Vegas due to the heat and sun intensity. I would keep her in the shade for a few weeks and gradually increase the sun exposure until you feel that it has adjusted to the conditions there. Watch it closely for burning leaves. Too much and the white portions of the variegation will become brown. Best of luck to you. Last edited by Chironex : 03-30-2009 at 12:51 AM. |

![]() My philippine banana I have grown in yard dirt always. Never though much about it. It seems to grow like a weed. It puts out many pups. I hate to throw bananas away. It produces bananas here in the 3rd year. But remember we have to dig up and put away for the winter. My friend bought it from a Philippine woman who lives in Memphis Tennessee about 7 years ago. I have planted some of my special bananas in piotting soil. I need to check about soil for AE. I will not be able to put it outside untill late May here. It can frost upto the middle of May here.
