Default Hello from CO

Hi everyone,
My name's Luke, i'm in zone 4b colorado, north of denver. I grew up in NY, have been out here for 3 years now.
I live in a townhouse with my gf so i don't have a yard to plant in, but we do have a few dozen container plants on our porch haha. We also have two 10'x20' plots in the community garden where we have a big spread of veggies! yum. Out on the porch i have a bears lime, a kumquat and a dwarf wash orange, 3 figs, two blueberries, a couple goji berries(slow growing for me).
Right now i'm infatuated with tropical fruits and currently have the following sprouting or growing: a couple mangos, lychees, cherimoyas, a few varieties of papaya and pineapple guava. I also just got packets of seeds of: tropical guava, strawberry guava, sugar apple, noni, grumichama, two more types of papaya including a dwarf, and loquat. I also picked up a jaboticaba from a local nursery, that was an un expected find. Pretty much anytime i eat fruit, i'll plant a seed haha. I haven't had much luck sprouting dragon fruit seed or rambutan yet.

I can easily see this fascination spreading to bananas. I don't know much about growing them, but this seems like the site to be on.

Also, this is going to sound cheesy but, i decided to join this forum because HBL is an active member here. Love her enthusiasm about plants! Just read through the aero-garden thread and it inspired me to get mine back out and use it to sprout some of these tropical seeds and see if they do better than in ground.

Thanks, looking forward to being an active member

-Luke

Hi,
Welcome, you should love it here

Don't worry I joined because The HollyBerry Lady told me to

I don't know of many bigger, outdoor bananas you could grow there, maybe a basjoo if you are lucky? But for indoors theres plenty you could get if you have the room inside for plants

Thanks for the welcomes everyone. We actually have probably an ideal room for a banana, 17ft vaulted ceiling in our living room, no fan at the top. with a very large south window, and double sliding glass doors on the west wall. However i think the gf would kill me if i told her i was gonna grow a 10, 12, 15foot plant there haha. I didn't even mention all the house plants and other non edibles we have :-P. Oh i forgot to mention our coffea arabica. we got a great deal on a big 5ft bushy tree that already has berries and flowers!

JaNan - i saw you had some unusual edibles sprouting as well; goji, miracle fruit. what else do you have growing that's unusual edibles?

Thanks

-Luke

Hmmmmm, unusual edibles, I guess I have a lot. I have papaya also, but mine are in the AG - which is rather unusual. If you have read all the AeroGarden thread you can see I like to grow trees in there! I have a jaboticaba also. Cherimoya, dragon fruit (they are easy to sprout from seed - keeping the little fellas alive is another story!!! ) and other edible cactus, I have both the smallest tomato in the world (Spoon) and the smallest tomato plant in the world (MicroTom). Variegated pineapple, Chaya spinach tree, Pomegranates, Loquat, Mulberry, Kumquats, Meyers Lemon, Satsuma Orange, Limes, Starfruit, Passion Fruit, pecans, I know I am missing a bunch, but that's off the top of my head.

With a 17 foot ceiling and lots of glass I would say you do have an ideal place to grow a banana in!

Yum that list has me drooling. Mulberries are one of my favorite! My grandfather has a tree and I never took notice of it until recently. Yummm. I also tasted a pink mulberry variety and it was like a piece of candy! Has the loquat and cherimoya seedlings been easy to maintain? Hope you get some fruits from all those guys!
Thanks for sharing

-Luke

Edit: janan has your miracle fruit fully sprouted yet? I saw you had it in the AG. Know a good source for seed?

Luke, I bought mine off eBay and they came from Costa Rica. It took about three weeks to get them, but I have been pleased with how fresh they are. They are kind of expensive for seeds, I see the smaller amounts are running about $2 bucks a seed. But if you keep watching you can get a decent deal.

My seed in the AG has split open more but not much else has happened with it. I just started another one a couple days ago, just in case the first one has stalled out.

The Cherimoya has been a pain to tell you the truth, the loquat easier.

Thanks for the tips! My cherimoyas are having a hard time shedding the seed it looks like. Cant wait for the loquats and others to sprout. I've also got some 'wonderful' pomegranate cuttings I'm trying to root. Next I'll have to do some reading an find out which are some of the smallest banana varieties to grow. I know I've already read about people using fork lifts to transfer their plants around haha. I'm not ready for that in this stage of my life haha :-). Maybe some day!

Thanks,
-Luke
