Hi,

my name´s Alex, I´m from Germany, near Karlsruhe (Zone 8). Besides travelling, my hobby are exotic plants in a non-exotic environment
I have a mediterranean front garden (1) and a sub-tropical backyard (2)

Plants in (1):

3 Trachycarpus fortunei, 2 are 5ft+ high, one is 4 ft. high, 1 Poncirus trifoliata (bitter orange), 1 punica granatum, 1 Eriobotrya japonica (8ft high), 1 eucalyptus gunni (was 10ft, frozen down this winter, is regrowing), 1 Elaeagnus x ebbingei (4ft), 1 Calycanthus floridus (3ft), 1 small Chamaerops humilis, 1 yucca thompsonia (4ft), 1 arbutus unedo (4ft+) and in the centre 1 10ft albizia julibrissin.

Plants in (2): (just some)

8 musa basjoo (one actually flowering), 3 ensete ventricosum, 1 doz. Taro (elephant ear), 1 olea europaea, 1 schinus molle (red pepper tree), 1 nerium oleander, 1 trachycarpus, 1 Musella lasiocarpa, 2 different yuccas (??), 1 Koelreuteria paniculata, 8 or 10 different ferns, 1 Kiwi, 1 Cotinus coggygria, 1 (actual flowering) lagerstroemia indica, some citrus, 1 Kapok (not really sure), 2 Strelitzia reginae, 1 plumbago, 1 abutilon (yellow) and much more.

Most of the plants are IN the garden and stay outside through winter (with protection).

I´m looking / searching more (hardy!) banana plants, perhaps somebody can help me??

Thanks

Alex

Welcome to the site! Hope you enjoy it here, learn some new things and make some friends! There's a lot of information in the forums/wiki pages, so be sure to peruse them to find answers to your questions. If you don't find it there, just ask! People are very helpful!

I'm not sure what zone IN is, but most naners probably aren't hardy there without some protection. Basjoo are your best bet for overwintering, otherwise, you can grow most anything if you overwinter it indoors.

Hi, LilRaverBoi!

Thanks 4 the reply, but I think there was a missunderstanding: 'IN' doesn´t mean 'INDIANA' but in the garden (=outside) ;-)

Have a nice day

Alex

Welcome aboard, Alex ! Sounds like a really incredible collection of plants you have! It's a very friendly & info-packed forum. If you have any questions about using the forum, just ask.
As for Cold Hardy bananas for European zone 8, I would think that Musa Pahari Kela or Musa Virupakshi (Indian Hill bananas) might be an option. I'll let Jack Daw know you are here. He knows a lot about both & also a lot about cold hardy bananas. He also lives in Europe.

Cold Re: Intro

Hi from a cool German who MUST live in a cold environment

Thanks for the friendly "hello´s" and the compliments about my garden I´ll post some picture in the next few days to 'complete' my profile.

Hey, I´ve been to Maryland and New Jersey, but never to IN and CA (yet, but I will, I´m sure, because in my heart I´m an American )

@Eric:

Thanks for the tip. If you also know, where I could get these wonderful plants, I´d be very happy. I´m always 'on the run' for new bananas to get a better variety in my garden.

Have a nice and wonderful weekend, wherever you are. And always luck in growing (bananas)

Alex
