Introduction and a question.....
Hello! I am obviously a new member to this board. I was sent an e-mail by Jarred (MediaHound) telling me about the board over here. I am glad to be a part of bananas.org. I live in Greenwood, S.C., and I enjoy all tropical plants, including palms and cycads. I bought my first three banana plants this Spring, a musa basjoo, a Musella Lasiocarpa, and a Musa Acuminata Super Dwarf Cavendish. I planted the musa basjoo in the ground, and wow, does it grow fast! I already have two "pups" coming up next to it! I put the Musella Lasiocarpa in a really big pot, but I think that I could have put it in the ground too because I was told that it would come back in the Spring. The super dwarf is in a pot on my patio for now, but I will take it in before we get our first frost (probably around the middle of next month.) I would like to get more solid zone 8a bananas to go in my yard. What other varieties would grow well year after year for me? Thanks, and it is great being here!

Re: Introduction and a question.....
Welcome! I am learning lots of helpful things here myself!
I'm in Zone 9, and one of the best plants here seems to be Ice Cream. I planted one last year, that one produced two pups - that are almost as tall as the mom - and there are more pups coming up. We had record rainfall last winter, and some very bad heat waves this summer, but these plants didn't show the stress that some of my others did. |

Re: Introduction and a question.....
Hello pallie,
there are lots of banana trees you can grow there. Correct me, if I'm wrong Chironex, but ideal would also be: Gran Nain, Saba, RajaPuri, Texas Star, Orinoco, Dwarf Orinoco, Williams Hybrid, California Gold ... Just to choose the best one (and that's where everyone's experience vary). Welcome to the board.

Re: Introduction and a question.....
Basjoos of course, but Orinocos should do well to if you get an early start and a long growing season for them. Greenwood can be cold, if are you on the lake and provide a little protection next to the house, you may get fruit!
