Need To Learn More

We got some banana trees last year from a neighbor. The results were fantastic! 2 of the trees even produced bananas. The back yard looked like a tropical heaven! We were not sure how to winter them correctly. We dug up the first 2, they were very heavy to move, we left 2 in the ground and covered them with mulch, when we uncovered them they were mush., (which have now started over, and are about a foot tall. THe ones we dug up were put under the house as we were told. We have planted them but they are not doing so well. Were we supposed to cut them back and by how much?
We love our trees, there is a lot to learn, but we are willing. Please advise.

It will depend on what part of the country you live in. If you live in one of the cooler areas, BIGDOG made an excellant post on this very topic. Go to the cold hardy section and it will be the very top thread.

Props to BIGDOG!!!! The title is "Time to store the bananas, dormant for the Winter". It tells you step by step how to store your bananas thru the winter. or you can pot them and bring them inside infront of a southern facing window. But water very very little or it will rot. Good luck

hi and welcome to the nanaorg!!!!! i wintered mine in the house as this was my first yr with nanas. you can look up in the archives( go to the bottom of the page on the right hand side for the archive and click on it.) for wintering nanas as there is a lot of info in that thread. i will be using bags of leaves and tarps to protect mine this winter. with straw to fill the gaps between the bags.

Hey! A Big Welcome from Texas!!!
I store mine under the house..I remove the leaves prior to storing.. When I pull them out I put them in the ground.. It takes a bit for them to develope a new root system...During that time they will just sit there..LOL You may want to take a pic and start a thread .. see what type of input ya get..

And thank you from another Texan! I really need to know if they need to be cut doen before storing, before planting the next year, or not at all. We really love them and want to do it right. I may take a picture of the trees that have survived. I was gong to buy another one at Lowe's but it was pitiful!
