![]() I live on the Suwannee River in Gilchrist County near Bell, FL and a friend and I recently started a small nursery and we are most interested in native plants. I'm specifically looking to learn more about propagation of Zamia Floridiana from seed. I have harvested a decent number of seeds, they are red/yellow very colorful and many have dried up and are left with a sort of thick hard brown covering. I have read about scarifying the seed and am looking for references on how best to germinate the seed.

![]() Welcome to the forum, Rhett. You'll find this a great place for all kinds of information. As I'm in Maryland, I don't have a lot of info on coonties, but are you guys doing any bananas?

![]() Hiya Rhett and welcome to the .org!
![]() Though we are basically bananas here, there are quite a few of us who are into other plants as well. As for the Zamia floridiana or Coontie, they are very easy to germinate if they are viable. First you have to remove the pedicarp and then soak the seeds for a day or two. After that you can put them half buried in a pot and keep them moist. Before you know it, a radicle will come out and find its way into the soil. The last stage will be a new shoot coming out and turning into a leaf. I like this plant very much as it is a vigorous grower and readily produces off shoots. All the best! ![]() |
