Southern California banana lover
Hello everyone. I finally got all those lovely banana plants into the ground yesterday. My plantation is off to a great start. About me: I live in Anaheim, a mile from the happiest place on earth, Disneyland. We have a subtropical-temperate microclimate here, and all around the neighborhood are banana trees! They thrive here, fruiting vigorously.
My trees have been in large pots for two years, and are mostly of the Cavendish type. I have a Golden that is not doing too well, and a few plantains that were dug from a friend's yard, as well. I have a dedicated palnting area, cement berm to contain the future bounty, all prepared. I plan to start the seeds I have collected from the internet, so I will be looking for tips and info on that sort of thing soon. Nice to be here, with fellow banana fans. Barb in So Cal |

Hi Barb!
When I was a senior in high school, I worked at Disneyland as an ice-cream/popcorn vendor. After that, it took me about 2 decades before I could hear "its a small world" without a negative reaction! Then of course No Doubt released this commemorative song: Google Music: No Doubt

Re: Southern California banana lover
Thanks to everyone for the hearty gone bananas welcome! Great news! Two plants have already begun to eke a new leaf out. Looks like the transplanting has succeeded. Am keeping fingers crossed that the Golden keiki survives, and her mama doesn't seem any improved.
My area has had an extremely mild winter, and the neighborhood banana trees are in full-fruit mode. I am hoping that next year I can report that my plantation is like-wise endowed. I read up on the seed propagation; whew! too much science for this girl. I will give it a go, anyways. Ha ha ha, yes, Richard! "It's a Small World" is so held in disdain in OC. Why do we hate that song SO much? Well, they re-did the ride, and it just reopened last week... probably still has that song! Two of my kids worked there, and both hated that attraction. I myself liked it, especially the tropical "worlds" and the banana trees... I am surprised to hear that bananas are doing so well in West LA, as it's so much closer to the beach (maybe 10 degrees cooler than my house!), but that is great to know, Momoese. I moved back up here from San Diego a few years ago.... nearly all things tropical grew very, very well for me there. The one thing is messed up was getting my bananas to fruit. Of course, that was before I knew about this great site! Thanks again for the welcome. I'm a know-nothing, but hope to become a future banana guru someday... Off to explore the place now. See you laters, barb |

I have always thought that each person's individual hell was the 3 things they fear most. For me, it is flying, going to the dentist, and 'Its a Small World'. So, my personal hell is getting on the airplane to go to the dentist, and the only thing on the earphones is 'Its a Small World',.........for eternity! Try it yourself. line up your own personal 3 fears into a single scenario....and it will put the fear of God into you. If you have trouble with this, send me your 3 biggest fears and I will construct your own personal hell....for free!

Re: Southern California banana lover
Indeed! We ARE global.... and it is great to know that even in the chilliest, coldest areas people are bananas about naners!
I intend to learn a lot from all here. Good news... the Golden's pup seems stronger today, and seems to have weathered the transplanting. I hope his mom perks back to life... Bepah...thanks, you have given me nightmares; my own fault, ran out of Nyquil. Thanks for your greetings, everyone. I need to master your photo-sharing techniques, and then I'll post the plantation's photo. Off to hug a naner! |
