Default Sue

Hi everyone
I am glad that I have found this site. I came across it while trying to identify a rare Hawiian Palm that I bought a few years ago. I found a photo on this site, after many hours looking on Hawiian sites without finding anything remotely like my Palm, which I now now is a Valcan Palm. If anyone has any experiances with this Palm or photos of the few remaining Palms in the wild I would love to hear from you.
I am a teacher of special needs Asberger Autistic kids in England. I teach Horticulture and small animal care I also run a market stall with the students selling the plants they have grown to raise money for charity.
I have to do an assembly soon, and I plan to use my Palm as the subject of this assembly. I want to let them see that some plants are special and need special care just as they do. I want to be armed with answers to all the questions that I will undoubtedly get about the Palm and why it needs so much help.

Welcome to the organization Sue!
There are many people on this site with good information, but I find you sometimes have to wait till people see your post! Best wishes. The only palms I grow are native threatened or endangered palms (in Florida)and Fiji coconuts.

Welcome to the .Org! I am also a special needs teacher in Illinois.

I don't know much about the palms, but I am sure with the family here you will find the answers you are looking for.

I hope that your assembly goes well.

Sue,

I think you may mean a Vulcan Palm, Brighamia insignis, which is not a palm at all.

It is critically endangered and you have something incredibly rare and valuable.

If you would be so kind to post some photois, I would be ever so appreciative.

Go to Vulcan Palm forall of the information you want.

Good luck in your presentation.

Thanks,

John

Joy Re: Sue

Hi Sue and welcome to the .org!

Can't help you much with the Vulcan Palm, Brighamia insignis but I know it's from the Campanulaceae family which is the bell flower gang. The Brighamia along with a couple more sp are found in Hawaii and is threatened by feral pigs and other varmints. On top of that, its pollinator insect is also getting less. Sorry I don't have a pix of this plant. I once saw it for sale and I thought it was a Pachypodium of sort.
All the best.
