Default Bananas at my neighbours

Hi,

this mat is growing very close to my house and I would like to ask if somebody could let me know which variety it could be. If it's some interessting variety I'll go over there and ask for a pup.

The guy cuts them down every winter and I haven't seen a flower yet. All you can see is this year's growth. There was nothing in spring. It's about 3 - 4 m (9 -12 ft) high. In one of the pics my little daugther is standing in front. She almost three years old (just for size reference )

The pictures were taken with my iPhone. If you need more and/or better pics it's no problem.

And it seems to be a habit here in this country to cut everything down starting from olives to most of the trees.

You know, that's from the ancient and Spartan times, to cut everything.

As for the banana, it's quite tall, so if it's edible, it will most likely be Orinoco or some variant of that (Cavendish types wouldn't probably make it there) and if it's not edible, than I don't think it's basjoo, the pup has lots of wax... But I'm no expert, just the first hunch.

P.S: Why does everybody here have iPhone?

Ask him to leave the bananas as they are this winter, so that they can fruit. Then it should be easier to identify them.

I wish I had the same kind of problem...or at least ONE neighbor who grows bananas...

I don't think he'll change his mind. Maybe if I talk with him and he asks for advice he could change his "spartan way of gardening" When my plants come through winter safely I could show it to him next spring and he may try to preserve at least the stems in the following winter.

But if I don't get a more or less clear ID here, I just go over and ask for the pup shown in the pics. I can grow it myself and then hope for a flower and fruit and find out this way. But I may be eating some of the evidence

From my own experience with Greeks, all you have to do to make him stop cuting those bananas is to tell him, that it's an unnecessary work and that he doesn't have to do it for bananas to thrive.
That's an argument no Greek will be able to resist believing.

Well cutting the Greek Gouvernment Deficit would be a nice alternative to cutting bananas

I'm thinking Orinoco as well. Or maybe Manzano. However, the hands will tell the truth.

Next spring, I will try to get a pup, because now the cut everything down - even the leaves didn't get burned from the cold. Now all that stuff is lying around my nanners as mulch.
