Dalmationsoap told me he believed my largest banana may not be a Basjoo, I was hoping to see what everyone thought:


This has white powder at the stem, red midrib and raised defined veins on a rounder leaf.

Also when I have a fresh leaf it has a small curl on the tip and if I pull the curl off early it feels like its attached almost with cotton (where i am guessing it got the name fiber?)

Also noticed the very outer rim of the leaf has a thin purple line coloration (don't know if that's normal, you can see it in the second photo)

I purchased it from texas traders and it arrived a 3 foot pstem chopped down with a root mass.

Dalmationsoap may be right....this doesn't match my basjoo's description. It has the overall appearance of one, but my basjoo (3years old) has no red coloration at all, being an overall soft green with the center ribs being a rich golden-green, and no purple on the leaf edges at all. Mine is hardy outside here, and even with cooler temperatures, shows none of the red colorations you describe. I concur with Saltydad, you need to find someone to make a positive identification.....you may have to change your storage options accordingly too, at least for this one plant. Good luck with this!

I'm not sure what it is either but I can tell you it is NOT a basjoo. Basjoos don't have wax on the stem. Plus the leaves on your plant seem stiffer, almost like a Saba.

No way it's a basjoo, the younger plants usually have a red stripe in the mid rib of the leaf that fades with age ... or not....and the leaf shape isn't quite right either. Ditto the waxy p-stem. Still a nice healthy looking plant though.

If the banana has the white powder-like material and the brackts of a bud
is not yellowish green/brown, it definitely is not "Basjoo".
As I can see from the picture, there are white powder on the pstem and
petioles, therefore it is not "Basjoo".

What a letdown after growing it all summer, I feel cheated I wanted one I could leave outside.
Anyone have any ideas on what it is then? Gabe, anyone else?

I thought it looked a lot like the one sandy has on her site? Sandy I hope you don't mind I put your picture up, is this a picture of a mother Basjoo you use?

The red has faded at this point on mine but it had the same red stripe coloration in the summer, although I think her leaves look more delicate and wavy there compared to mine.

It could be an orinoco, based on the waxy coating and pseudostem color.

It may not be a basjoo, but at least it appears to be an edible banana.
