Default Beautiful red plant from M. velutina seed
Hi, long time since I last posted.

I planted 100 M. velutina seeds from RPS last year, the plants look normal except for this one red individual which looks quite distinct.

I would love to hear if anyone has any idea what it is, if not then I'm just showing it off because I think it's really beautiful!

Toby at RPS told me the velutina seeds are produced close to sikkimensis seeds, so potentially a velutina X sikkimensis.

Where did you get your velutina from Chipb2?

They aren't a cross it is a variant of Velutina called Markuanna. This trait is indicative of that variant. The fruit will also be smooth skinned.

You have a Musa Velutina var Markuanna quite a new discovery and named after Marku Hakkinen.

Thanks for the replies.

Does anyone have any photos of young subsp. Markkuana plants? I have seen the plant described in the literature (Musa velutina subsp. markkuana (Musaceae): a new subspecies from northeastern India, 2013) and I don't think it looks very much like this one, but I wouldn't be surprised if the plant's colour fades with age.

I have one MV v.Markkuana , i bought from jmoore last summer as seedling. This year put in the ground. Doing quite nicely , already pupped out ;-)

It has yes. It is indeed markkuana. Flowered twice but fruits aborted both times, probably lack of pollination under glass. I got a load of seed in last year and I've grown a bunch more since.

Tried to upload a photo of it flowering 2 years ago but it's just not appearing in my gallery now.
