A couple of unknowns
Any ideas on these fellas. Should be really easy for most folks on this site. I think the two are ice creams (blue javas), but I lost most of my nanners overwintering last year, and lost track of what was what (had over 13 varieties). I'm trying to get back on track and make sure I know what's what. Thanks in advance for your help.
This variegated fella? Are these both Blue Javas? - they both look similar, but I'm not sure - that's a Basjoo leaf sticking in from the right. The pic may not be telling enough though - I could try another pic (overhead?) if it's needed. |

Re: A couple of unknowns
Mine is a Musa Sumatrana Zebrina (Rojo).
Musa Sumatrana (Rojo) - Bananas Wiki At the very least we are getting close right? Here is the Wiki link for Ice Cream: Musa Blue Java (Ice Cream) - Bananas Wiki Gabe will know for sure, though Tony has much more experience than I do!!! ~JaNan

Re: A couple of unknowns
I swore I remember it being labeled a Gran nain, but knew that wasn't it. The gran nain cross might be it. It's only in dappled sunshine, so that should explain the really dark colors. Regardless, I'm a big fan of it. Thanks for all your help.

Re: A couple of unknowns
If you got it from a big box store, their labeling leaves a lot to be desired. Sometimes even the nurseries screw up badly too....so I wouldn't hang my hat on the label too much.

Re: A couple of unknowns
Yeah, I'm aware of big box labeling. I've purchased from Sandy at Northern Tropics, Wellspring, e-bay for my first few (before I started reading the org), a couple local nurseries, and traded a few. I just can't seem to find my records, which at one time were pretty good, but I'm trying to figure out if the online retailers still have records of my orders. Time will tell I guess. Thanks again.

Re: A couple of unknowns
Sandy does sell that Sumatrana and Gran Nain cross. I wonder if that would be an edible banana? Hmmmmmm..........I really like the colorful variegates! So pretty! ~J

Re: A couple of unknowns
After some further checking, I know it didn't come from Wellspring - detailed records of purchases. Sandy's site only shows "recent orders," so no dice. It's quite possible that's the case and the nanner. Thanks.

Re: A couple of unknowns
One way to check of those are Ice Creams is if they have a pinkish-red outline on the leaves. They do appear to have the waxy substance under the leaves, which all Ice Creams (including mine) have.

Re: A couple of unknowns
I got one of those variegated red bananas in an order of gran nains 2 years ago. I planted it at my house where it is still only about 4' tall.
Yet another screw up by agristarts...Although I suppose 95% of the time you get exactly what you order. |
