Did Ty Ty send me the wrong banana?
Hello all... I just recently bought a 3 gallon corm from Ty Ty that is supposed to be a basjoo. I have never seen a basjoo emerge with red outlines. Too small for me to see if the petioles are winged, but my other basjoos that have sprouted do not have this red outline along the edge of the leaf. Can anyone confirm if they've seen basjoo's like this? I've only had basjoos that I got from Hardy Tropicals years ago and like I said, never seen the red edges.

Re: Did Ty Ty send me the wrong banana?
Maybe, I know Tytyga.com is a website to avoid. They harassed gardenwatchdog.com to remove all reviews, which is never a good thing, and yes I know people abuse ratings and such.
I have bought from tytyga.com and was not happy. |

Juni, you've been on this website long enough to know better than to order from them!

Re: Did Ty Ty send me the wrong banana?
Lol... I know... but something tunneled into and ate a couple of my corms overwinter, so I wanted to replace with a nice-sized corm instead of waiting for pups to start coming off the other plants... so I ordered a couple 3-gal corms from them (everyone else had starters and TC's... didn't want that). I guess I'll have to wait for it to get bigger and see what it is. If not basjoo, I'll have to trade for one since I'm not digging up corms for winter. "(

Re: Did Ty Ty send me the wrong banana?
Well, hopefully it will turn out to basjoo and you'll be happy. It may just be a fun experiment and you might have a nice big banana plant by the end of summer that isn't basjoo. That wouldn't be so bad.

Re: Did Ty Ty send me the wrong banana?
I looked at my Basjoos today. The pups on some that I overwintered outside, wrapped and protected, have red midribs. Some larger ones, that I overwintered dry, in a cool room, do not have the red midribs, and none have red edges. (BTW, these are all pups from the same tray of AgriStarts TCs, that I got a few years ago.)

Re: Did Ty Ty send me the wrong banana?
Please, please, please...don't buy from Tyty. I'm sure someone on this site has basjoo out the ying-yang for a good price.

Re: Did Ty Ty send me the wrong banana?
Anyone else care to take a jab at it? From what I see in their catalogs, they sell Dwarf Brazilian, Dwarf Cavendish, Carolina King, Mysore, Nam wah, Grand Nain, Golden Rhino, Rajapuri, and Texas Star...
The red blotches and the red outline on the leaves are what worry me. Any of the above mentioned will not survive here like the basjoo would. |

Re: Did Ty Ty send me the wrong banana?
I agree that the leaf shape looks like Dwarf Namwah, but it would be very unusual for that variety to have the red blotches on the leaf that this plant has. The leaf shape certainly suggests some dwarf type, but on small plants like this, leaf shape can be misleading. In short, I don't know. And I wouldn't limit your choices to the varieties they claim they have.
Post a picture of the petiole (leaf canal), that might help narrow things down. |

Re: Did Ty Ty send me the wrong banana?
Definitely not Namwah, which has closed petiole canals. The open petiole canal with spreading "wings" combined with the very short petioles and some faint wine stains makes something like Dwarf Cavendish most likely, given the source. But it is still a very small plant, so it is a bit hard to be sure at this point.

Re: Did Ty Ty send me the wrong banana?
I don't think its a DC since it doesn't have any red in the P-stem.. It might be a texas star. Is it just one plant? If it didn't have red blotches I'd think it was a D. Orinoco.. :^)

Re: Did Ty Ty send me the wrong banana?
Definitely not D. Orinoco, with open petiole canals with wings (DO has a closed canal with no wings).
