Smile Re: Opinions on new banana plants

I am just going to toss this out there.......
Most bananas at that size all look the same...All foliage at that size looks the same for most commercial plants.

Your plant has to mature and flower and fruit for a precise id.
Some of the Pros and Banana Whisperers on this site will help.

The wiki link has cali gold pics. Not surprising that the Texas star write up doesn't have a pic posted. Cinci is right though many banana pups look alike

Wasn't it decided that Texas Star is just a name that someone made up for another plant??? Maybe Dwarf Orinoco???

If they have Wine blotches on the leaves as they get a little bigger none are what you ordered.. If one doesn't have the blotches on the leaves most likely a Dwarf Orinoco. I think that place sells alot of Dwarf Cavendish as other plants, just so you know.. :^)

All of my nanas took a beating last winter - but are bouncing back. I've been told by wiser nanaheads that the Tx Star variety is a myth. Claims of super cold hardiness - not any more than other hardy plants.
Tx Star probably is an orinoco - if it came from TY Ty, it could be anything.

I was surprised that my Cali Gold won the cold hardy contest at my house last winter - it still has green pstems standing and pushing cigars at 4 ft height. (orinoco, namwah, D namwah, double, D. Braz, GoldFinger all lost their standing pstems)

Thanks guys for all of the info,I'm a newbie to growing bananas other than a saba that I've grown for a couple of years,it's done pretty good and even fruited last fall but the brutal winter this year took it out completely or so I thought but I now have 2 new pups coming up .I guess I'll find out what I really bought later on this year on the new plants but on a positive note I've got a few coming from Larry (Darkman) that I know will be true to name .
