Saw this and wondering what kind?
I was on the Tropitone.com website looking at patio furniture and saw a photo of some bananas in one of their layouts that I loved the height and leaf position of (very vertical). Any chance you guys might have an inkling as to what type this might be? Since it's not my photo, I'm providing the link to the page. Thanks.

Re: Saw this and wondering what kind?
Yep, Strelitzia nicolai, a close relative of the banana.

Re: Saw this and wondering what kind?
...and if you like it, also consider getting it's cousin, the Travellers Palm (not a true palm)
Here's a photo of the plant (it's since put on a lot more weight), but I do actually grow a few Strelitziaceae, the White bird, this Travellers Palm (Ravenala madagascariensis), and also the common Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae).

Re: Saw this and wondering what kind?
Jarred, can you tell how old your travellers palm is? This because I have
a picture of the palm in one of my books where the palm has a stem from about 5 a 6 feet. Just wondered how old this one than would be. ron |

Re: Saw this and wondering what kind?
I would be guessing. The landscaper (second owner) that I (third owner) bought my home from had it installed in the back yard, relocating it from the front where it was getting too large for the spot it was in. So that leads me to believe it was installed back in the day when it was very small and no care was taken to see into the future that it would outgrow its spot. And the home was built in 93 / 94, and probably initially landscaped shortly thereafter. So lets assume the plant was a couple years old at that time when it was first planted out (they probably didn't plant out seeds, right)... it could be ten or fifteen years old by now.
You cannot see the main stem in that photo as it is blocked by some fronds, but it's up there, prob 7 or 8 ft where the crown begins. Even if I asked the guy I got it from, he wouldnt know as he bought it and resold it to me only a few months later. I could do some research as I have the # of the builder / first owner, he might know more... But this should be a good round estimate, no?

Re: Saw this and wondering what kind?
Checked out the picture links posted and I think you guys are right about the white bird of paradise. I can't see a bird in the picture that I posted, but the leaves and stems do look very similar to your links. I've only seen the common orange birds and didn't realize some of the spieces got that tall. Thanks.
MediaHound I've only seen pictures of traveler palms and they are quite unique. Don't think I would have the space width-wise for one however. Sometimes I get envious of the size yards some of you guys have. I know a lot of yard work goes along with it, but still love the space and all the possiblities. Thanks again. |
