Hi All,
I've had the main plant for four years now. It has produced two pups,one in its own pot (two years old) and one I have left attached (from this year). I have not been able to ID the type which will allow me to decide to plant outside or know why it has never produced bananas. If you could please take a look at the pictures in my gallery and offer up your thoughts it would be appreciated.

Its much too young and generic looking to ID, and it will not flower in a container that small. You will need a flower to ID it.

Bigger Pot? Its in a five gallon now. Maybe next year I'll plant them in the ground and see what happens. I'll keep the one of the pups in a pot to make sure I have one left in case the ground doesn't agree with foreign plant. How long should it take to flower? When it flowers does it mean it is coming to the end of its life? All questions I have.

By the way, thanks for the answer Gabe. I'll be visiting the island for the first time next July so I am looking forward to seeing huge banana plants instead of the tiny hotel variety we have here.

Bump- Anybody else want to take a stab at IDing my banana plants? I am drawing up plans for spring and if possible I want to incorporate them into the plantings. I will take winter precautions but want to make an educated guess before I commit to outdoor planting.

Even dwarf bananas get to be 6-8 feet tall, much larger than can be sustained in a 5 gallon pot. As a bananaphile, you will begin to think in larger sizes.

With regard to soil, a nice organic soil that drains well will give you results that will amaze. You'll get growth like you won't believe and pups galore. For example I had 3 Ice Creams this yesr in the ground, I now have 21. They greww from 2 feet tall to 8 feet and I expect fruiting this year. Feed and water heavily during the warm months and you will almost be able to watch them grow.

I want to plant these outdoors next year and see if I get any different results that them living in a pot. I am on the edge of the zones that I think with a little winterization I may be able to keep them in the ground year round. Now guesses at the variety? Few pics in my gallery for the looking.
