Ice Cream fruits
Are the fruits white at all? TThere is a picture in the gallery with white bananas.
A german shop sells banana trees with a picture of a white banana as "ICE CREAM sp." I want to have the real vanilla ice cream tree. Has anybody tasted anyone? Is the "green fruit ice cream" the real vanilla? The german shop says the white tasts like vanille and it is the best banana. Which is the real "best banana" of these Ice Cream plants? |

Re: Ice Cream fruits
I'll have to let you know later on. I have a large potted ice cream banana in the greenhouse, that I think it should bloom this year sometime.
It's about 8.5 feet tall or so in a large pot with three pups in the pot too ranging from 2-3.5 feet tall. So it's surely maturing. It's the banana in my "breakroom" picture that we sit under all summer in the driveway. This year, I'm going to tie it up to the garage though, it blew over a couple of times last year. I'd hate to have it do that with a bloom on it! I will have to say, it's been one of the most easy to overwinter in the greenhouse at 50 degrees. It really doesn't have much change in condition at all.

Re: Ice Cream fruits
My Ice Cream fruit are a silverish blue green when ripening - then they start turning yellow like a regular banana. The insides are more an ivory color, not really white but definitely not yellow. They also have a simlar consistancy as regular bananas. I was expecting a custard texture but they would have to get REAL ripe to get like that. BUT they do have a great taste. One of my favorites along with Red Iholene, Raja Puri and Hua Moa.

Re: Ice Cream fruits
From my experience, Ice Creams take longer to get pups than a lot of other bananas. So hang in there, Westwood, mine didn't pup until it was over 5 feet tall.

Re: Ice Cream fruits
I have to admit, I was not very impressed by the taste of Ice Cream fruit. I could not taste the custard flavor. I am sure they were completely ripe since several bananas split on the bunch. I enjoyed them much more when they were wrapped in bacon and baked.
I was wondering if there is a difference in quality depending on when they ripen. My bananas wintered on the plant and ripened in the spring. This year my banana should be ready in late summer-fall.

Re: Ice Cream fruits
I have definitely found that fruit that is formed and ripened with no cold temps taste better and tend to fill out (plump) more.

Re: Ice Cream fruits
Oh... I see that I never reported back on my bunches. Sorry. I need to step back from my games....
The fruit was very good! So sorry I didn't get to share with you Tammy. The pups from those plants really took a beating last month when the "big freeze" (and snow) showed up. I hope at least one produces this year. |

Re: Ice Cream fruits
I'm about 60 miles from L.A.
Have two Orinoco bunches right now, and two new blooms as well. I wish these plants would wait until Spring to bloom though! |

Re: Ice Cream fruits
My IC finally bloomed when the pstem was 14ft tall, and the bunch should be ripe around March I think, so I will let you know about the taste then. Presently the fruits are kinda silvery but definitely pale green.

Re: Ice Cream fruits
Can anyone provide a picture of what the inside of IC looks like? I have been told it is very white. I will find out in a few months but would love to see a pic so I know what is to be expected.

Re: Ice Cream fruits
Hey Worm Farmer - neither of us can wait!! They probably need to get really ripe and soft like the manzanos and orinocos to develope their full flavour - 2 months to go!!
