Default Rambutan pix to share.

Got some today, yummy! I buy some tropical fruit every month, this time it's rambutan. This whole box was $27.

WOW...crazy! I've never heard of, or seen such a fruit! Very interesting...what do they taste like? They look pretty tasty! The grocery stores in MO such.....the weirdest fruit they have are kiwis and mangos (which are pretty standard everywhere, right?). You can't get anything even remotely odd at ALL...I hate it!

I am sure that those taste good but they look alive and will crawl away at any time. I am curious about their taste also.

You can google rambutan for more info. I'm not good at describing taste. I'll try my best here. The spines are very flexible, do not hurt at all, feel like rubber spines on children's toys. There is a single large seed inside, surrounded by white flesh. The flesh is very sweet, somewhat leather-like, but easily chewable. Very juicy. You can most likely find canned rambutan at the supermarkets.

In California you can buy those in Oriental market all over when in season. To me it is close in taste as a fresh Lychee nut. And if you can not find them, try to buy the ones in cans . It will taste like almost the same less the syrup. It will look the same too without the furs.
Lychees can be grown in Florida. There is a plantation in Lakeland where I used to live where they said they supply New York and California.
