Basjoo affliction
Does anyone know what could be causing this on my m. Basjoo? I live in oklahoma. It has gotten these light brown spots on the new cigar leaf, just started doing it. Only thing that has changed is the temperatures, it's beven upper 90s and low 100s the past week. The basjoo is in full sun from about 11am-sunset. I water once a day, sometimes every other day if the soil is wet under the mulch. Planted it about a month and a half ago or so. Last edited by BigBoyBanana : 06-22-2016 at 12:39 PM. |

Re: Basjoo affliction
I live in Edmond. Try not getting water on leaves or where leaves come out of the stem.

Re: Basjoo affliction
I was going to say overfertilized.
It hasn't come out enough to be sunburned, and besides, the sun's not so hot there as here in Florida, and I have not seen it here. (Except on young plants I overfertilized.) They grow out of it.

Re: Basjoo affliction
Mine get that early in the season and grow out of it quickly. Your plants will be fine.

Re: Basjoo affliction
It is grown in the ground. No pot. First year I've had it.
Today one of the raggedy leaves was starting to separate from the stem so I pulled it back and there was a big moth between it and the Pstem. I noticed rot all on the inside of the leaf stem. Brownish sludgeyness. I cut back watering to every other day despite the full sun in high Temps, maybe it was getting too much water? Problem is when I don't water it just looks all wilty and crispy. Don't know why I'm doing wrong with this thing. Last edited by BigBoyBanana : 06-26-2016 at 01:04 PM. |

Re: Basjoo affliction
Wilting is normal; don't worry about that! My dad tried to help me out the other day by leaving a drippy hose on one of mine because it looked all wilty. They do that every day after the sun comes up. Every evening, they puff back out.

Re: Basjoo affliction
I think it has to do with the humidity. In the jungles, they stay nice and puffy. Here in NC, they droop a bit. In San Diego and Phoenix, they look like the living dead.

Re: Basjoo affliction
Just an update... the spots have seemed to gotten smaller. I had a leaf that was perfect with no signs of affliction. Then the next one had it, just a small spot. It's been pretty rainy of late, which dissipates and then turns to a very hot and muggy climate. I am attributing the spots to water from rain collecting around the crown of the plant combined with rapid growth and exposure to intense Oklahoman sunlight, causing sun burn on the cigar leaf when the leaf is most vulnerable. The week that the new leaf was perfect had little rain, so no water collected around the cigar leaf. Just a theory.
I am really not worried about it anymore, my basjoo is pumping out 2 leaves a week now and pupping, so whatever is causing the affliction must not be too detrimental. |

Re: Basjoo affliction
I don't think rain has anything do with the spots. I water 30 minutes every other day with my sprinkler system with no problems. They love water an high humidity. Just think about places around the world where bananas are native any are grown commercially. :

Re: Basjoo affliction
And if you think Ok sunlight is intense, go visit the tropics. Summer sun in OK is like winter sun in the tropics.
