Basjoos Are Back!
I'm in NE Atlanta and have been worried about my Basjoos as what was left of the mushy stems didn't take this harsh Winter too well. Much to my surprise, I just found several pups poking out! They are about 1" x 4" so it looks like I got lucky! Now if I can just get lucky with my Thai Colocasia and Alocasias!!! Nothing showing from those guys yet. |

Re: Basjoos Are Back!
I know it's been a nasty winter all around.
Do you usually get your elephant ears through the winter in the ground? I've had some in the past with mixed result, just got a couple of alocasia "borneo giant" and I'm wondering about what to do with them. In the ground or large pots to bring in. You're in about the same climate as me. Congrats on the basjoo, mine made it through like champs Dave Last edited by drobbins : 04-09-2014 at 05:55 PM. Reason: can't spell worth a flip |

Re: Basjoos Are Back!
I am glad to hear that! I am in zone 7 (Virginia east coast) and the same thing happened to my plants (misi luki) in the winter. Luckily I had some in pots, the biggest of which is 8 ft tall. I think if yours survived, mine will too! .
For some news... A lady in my town has plenty of bananas on her plant. She grows them in an extended room (reconverted deck), growing in the ground with mud where she did not tile. It stays in doors all the time and they have fruited plenty! |

I got one bulb of the elephant plant from Walmart for $5. I have placed it in a pot and hopefully the right side up!!!

Re: Basjoos Are Back!
On Ebay, look for Thai Giant elephant ears. They're usually from Wellspring Gardens or Florida Hill Nursery and I've had great service from both of these companies. When these plants get growing and thriving, expect leaves 3'-4' wide! I'm experimenting with a new plant this year, Gunnera Manicota, also called Dinosaur food. Huge tropical leaves.
