hot weather, banana leaves folding down?
Is this normal for hot weather, bananas both in containers and ground, their leaves folding down along their length. In other words the entire leaf isn't drooping, just the green part on either side of the leaf stem. They seem to have plenty of water(ing) but still with this problem.
Temperature up to 100+ today, in the 90's much of the day. It's 6pm and sunny side still at 101 deg in the shade. jc |

Re: hot weather, banana leaves folding down?
No problem. You'll notice in the evening the leaves open up again once it isn't so hot.
My guess is they either do it to conserve water on hot days, or to minimize surface area exposed to the sun to prevent burning. Somebody here will know for sure, either way your bananas are totally normal. ~Joe |

Re: hot weather, banana leaves folding down?
...My bananas are acting the same way.The lower leaves flap down but the leaves have maintained green. The new growth has not stopped at all,so I guess its the BASE getting larger in diameter.

Re: hot weather, banana leaves folding down?
I've noticed this too on some of my banana plants. Particularly the blood bananas in pots.
When I first brought them home I immediately placed them in full sun. I noticed the leaves folding down in the mid-day heat and then opening up again when it cooled off. However when the new leaves push out they seem to be able to take the mid-day heat with out folding down. The older leaves do though. The plant must be adjusting? |
