Default Musa "Helen's Hybrid" survived in Germany

Hi all!

Today I checked my both Helen's Hybrid under the winter protection, the pseudotrunks seem to be ok, even still green, under the very thick bark and leaf mulch, roofed by plastic and styropor plats.

In the next weeks I will remove the winter protection, it will get more milder, it's still too cold for this month, normally a bit warmer.

Helen's Hybrid might be as hardy as Musa sikkimensis. I also will try Musa "Prata" from Brazil with the same method. But it's not a problem because I have a yard in Brazil.

Best wishes

Mine also did well here with protection. Today I noticed a new pup had sprouted as well!

Good to hear. Today two Musa sikkimensis hybrids had sprouted for me, Musa helens hyrid, and Musa 'Balboa Park',(thanks to Frank). It will be fun to compare the different hybrids.

Joachim - what extremes of temperature between the two places where you live!! Or are you high up in Brazil with cooler temps? Must be interesting growing in the two different climates.

Hi, my 2 musa helen's hybrid are ok. The pseudotrunks are good and the foliage is now growing. They didn't have any protection. My zone is 9a or 9b (small brittany in France). My musa manzano seems to be cold resistant (pseudotrunk very good), and musa thomsonii, manii and ensete glaucum too.

Even my Hybrid Helen's happily past winter, without protection, but the minimum temperature was 3 ° C.

Now have new leaves

I am in Italy, near Genoa

Hi, you have very much luck. Congratulations! You might fruit Helen's Hybrid in Italy!

In Germany Helen's Hybrid might as hardy as M. sikkimensis and will hardly fruit. In Brazil it might fruit in every case. I will use it to cross with Musa basjoo in Brazil to improve its hardiness.

Best wishes
Joachim

My 'Helen's Hybrid' as of yesterday. It was protected with a bag of leaves over the top of both pseudostems.

My Helen's Hybrid at 10 April.

I have not put protections in winter, only the strong wind was a problem.
