my 2007 overwintering plan for basjoo in zone 5
Here's what I tried this fall, it's a little different than my usual plastic bag method. I guess you'd call this a modified plastic bag method.
http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/...58549380NRdoRc What do you think? I feel pretty confident with this one. I wish I'd used a different color tarp than the cheap blue ones though. I used one brown one and it looks much better, FYI.

Oops! I didn't realize that my picture scanner cut off some of the words. I'll put it in my gallery too.

Re: my 2007 overwintering plan for basjoo in zone 5
An update, so far this method seems to be working. Some of my bananas look like tents in the yard. They have a point in the middle where they've grown a little that they didn't have when I covered them up! I hope they're not staying TOO warm. I did put a bunch of leaves over the cut top ends of the pseudostems to help insulate the stubs further before covering with the tarps. I'll post a picture on the photo gallery when I get a chance today.

Re: my 2007 overwintering plan for basjoo in zone 5
i really like this method sandy! i think that when my basjoo go outside i will do this a winter protection with a tweek or two to it. my dad will be happy to get the leaves out of his yard( ill hit their neighbors houses also for leaves) and will use this method with the cage method. that way air can still circulate but it will be protected. im just so excited these are my first that will be going outside. i love to garden but this will put a new spin on my 'recreation time'. btw/ recreation time for me is gardening. lol thank you for showing the drawing, it gave me a few ideas on how to take care of the wintering of my children.

You could always cover the blue tarp with a brown one. Then you won't need to remove the blue one.
