Planting distances
I have run through many posts but can't seem to find anywhere that mentions how close together I can plant my new basjoo pups. I have one area about 8' long by 3' wide that I would like to form a small wall with the plants. I imagine planting 2 pups about 4 feet apart, leaving 2 feet on the ends for future growth. Too close?

Quote:
Hi Mike, how close you want to plant depends mainly on your purpose: Spacing of plants is generally proscribed to: a) accommodate maximum development of the individual plant b) allow access for care and harvest You stated objective is to “build” a wall and since you would probably not expect to harvest any fruit in a 6 to 7 hardiness zone, I would just jam all the available pups into that 8 x 3’ strip. The plants have enough room for expansion for their leaves to the side of the strip. In the pictures below you see my Basjoos in a pretty packed setting, because I prefer the dense lush look. You can see in this picture the bases of “mom”, which I planted last year, June and her first pup to her left. The second pup is hiding behind her. The third one I sliced off last fall and “raised” it inside in a pot. It is now located in a pot jointly with a Canna elsewhere. Beside those first 3 pups there are now another 5 smaller ones in the assembly. You can see here, that all the dense packing between other plants in my mini jungle have not harmed the Basjoos a bit. “Up top” they ar all strong and healthy. Best, Olaf

Re: Planting distances
Thanks, Olaf. I might just cram 3 of them in there for the time being. Then once they've established and grown a few pups I can thin the herd, transplant and expand the ranch!
