Siam Ruby = Hardy?
Hey all,
It is going to be a high of ~70 here on Tuesday and a low of 58 that night, with a high of 66 the next day. Is it possible that I can take it outside and let it get some real sun and fresh air on Tuesday - Wednesday and take it in Wednesday night? Here's our weather: 10 Day Weather Forecast for Virginia Beach, VA (23455) - weather.com I have it outside right now just because th e sun is hitting the black plastic making it hotter than it actually is right now (~60?) which makes it okay, but during night at 58? Safe? Thanks, I'm just trying to keep her safe. What have yours experienced? Taylor Last edited by Taylor : 02-03-2008 at 05:10 PM. |

Re: Siam Ruby = Hardy?
Taylor, what has been your experience with this banana? I am thinking about getting one if they are pretty easy. Thanks!

Re: Siam Ruby = Hardy?
They are really easy in my opinion...I got it as a TC a few weeks before winter and basically went into the house (in a bigger pot than original of course) as still a TC in size...then gained 2 pups which died due to the "harsh" conditions inside and the fact that they were just too small and had no vigor. Gained about 4 leaves over this winter (not a lot, I know) but it has put on some girth in pseudostem circumference and leaf width although the plant is completely green due to the lack of bright light... In total, that is very easy. I just want to know if it can handle a night of 58.
Joe in New Jersey(JoeS475), what has yours endured? I remember you talking about it if I am correct... Austin, it's a winner and the prices now are unbeatable from eBay. Thanks! |

Re: Siam Ruby = Hardy?
Taylor, Mine were out last fall till the temps were in the high 40's and it was just fine. Make sure you put it in a sheltered location so it doesn't get sun or wind burn, maybe on a porch.

Re: Siam Ruby = Hardy?
Alright, I will put it in a protected spot. It looks as if a 30% chance of rain...so no chance of sun damage, but I will check for wind speeds.
I just checked and it changed from Cloudy to AM Clouds - PM Sun with 20% chance of rain (basically saying don't expect precipitation), winds South-Southwest 17 mph, which is good because I can put the Siam Ruby in the backyard protected by the house while still getting the sun. Is PM sun enough to hurt it? It isn't THAT intense this time of year. 58 and high 40s is a big difference, but it's good to know that it can take it. Thanks! |

Re: Siam Ruby = Hardy?
If it's a partly cloudy day it should be ok. I burned a fern a couple of weeks ago, don't know if it was sun or wind, we had both that day. Remember they're really tender after being in the house all winter.

Re: Siam Ruby = Hardy?
I'd say put it outdoors in the shade in a sheltered place for a few days to a week, then move it out into more open conditions. You can also put it out in its regular location, but provide shelter by rigging a temp fence, etc around it in the form of a large cardboard box with the top cut out of it. Then if you feel the sun is still too intense, put an old sheer curtain or piece of frost blanket over the top. Then next week, take off the frost blanket, then in a few more days, cut a couple sides off the box, then remove it entirely.

Re: Siam Ruby = Hardy?
Since the 2 days outside and being placed inside, it is growing at a much fast rate.
Just an update. |
