sikkimensis x basjoo?
Anyone ever try crossing them? sikkimensis x basjoo or basjoo x sikkimensis...
Sounds like a really good hybrid, especially if you try a Darjeeling or Manipur source. I think they seem close enough? Last musa cross thread I saw was 5 years ago, plenty of time to play :-) Success or failure stories? |

Re: sikkimensis x basjoo?
If this seems to be possible, you should try a "Sapporo" cultivar on the Basjoo side. It should be one of the hardiest in the Basjoo family.

Re: sikkimensis x basjoo?
Hello tastyratz,
As I haven't yet cross pollinated sikkimensis x basjoo, but I tried Helen's x Sikkimensis this year and am waiting for its result. The first hand is Helen's x Helen's to produce the pure Helen's fruits. The second is Helen's x Basjoo. This will more or less be similar to Sikkimensis x Basjoo. The third hand was tested for its parthenocarpy, but seems to be failed. |

Re: sikkimensis x basjoo?
Great job, you also support my program. My program is to hybridze hardy bananas and create hardy fruit bananas!
If you get seeds, then I am interesting for seeds. My friend Helton might grow them from seeds then for me. But it is possible that I will stay for 4 months every year from the next year in Brazil. I will retire partly because of my eye's health. Best wishes Joachim |

Re: sikkimensis x basjoo?
Commendable program, especially if the community can further the varieties that will grow in cooler zones. I appreciate the appeal (pun intended) of producing hardy fruiting varieties, but some of us would heartily support an effort to produce a greater number of cool zone hardy varieties and hybrids period. As we all know, you can't have too many 'nanners'!

Re: sikkimensis x basjoo?
Thanks for the posting and the pics of the results. Joachim, I'm sorry to hear of your eye problems. Wow, you have been hit with some health issues lately! Hope you feel better soon. Any word on the English translation of your book yet?

Re: sikkimensis x basjoo?
Hi,
I'm planning to work only 8 months during the summer in Germany and stay 4 months during the winter in Brazil, this is also a problem with eye sight problems, the dark season is the horror for me, too dark to go to my job in the morning, in Germany the mornings and the afternoons are dark in the winter time, I hate also this. I hate cold and dark winters. Like one banana tree. I hope that my boss will accept. My eye doctor is the same opinion like me. But do not worry, she told me that I will not go blind. In the moment the new updated version of my banana book is revised in Greece by Bernd, he is also one member here in our forum. @Bernd, please reply my PN, you got one PN. Then I will correct and complete my book, then the new German version will be published and the translation service of bod.de will translate my banana book to English. I also wrote 2 further books, one about the exotics and palms on the island of Helgoland, also one English version of this book is planned. Also one Science ficition novel is nearly completed. The Helgoland exotic book is also revised currently like my new banana book update. I was not in the forum for the longer time, the third book is nearly ready, but I will complete it in Brazil, I will go to Brazil in the next month. Best wishes Joachim |
