Re: Successful Fruiting in zone 6??
You really never know. You could possibly get ripe bananas, but the chances are fairly low. It wouldn't keep me from trying though so go for it!!!

Re: Successful Fruiting in zone 6??
Hello, brand new to group. I would like to just have successful wintering which seem to be my naner weakspot. my photos show the past 2 winters of rotting them to the ground but having pups come back. take a look and feel free to let me know what I am doing wrong as I am new to naners but love them.

Re: Successful Fruiting in zone 6??
wilson, where are you located? Unless you're in a warm winter location, basjoo will die back to the ground over the winter. Don't dispair, this is normal. Attempts to keep parts of the pseudostem alive have been made with various wrappings, etc., but I don't know how successful these have been. I always end up with a rotten looking p-stem that then starts with new growth pushing out in the spring, and thats with mulching with straw.

Re: Successful Fruiting in zone 6??
I'm in SE Ohio, dreaded winter this year, many nights below 0. Mulched with straw in 07, rotted to the ground as they got wet. Tried to keep them dry this past winter, they again were very moist (probably due to my plastic wrapping), mulched with dry leaves.... I am sure pups will rise and start from the ground again, which is fine.

Re: Successful Fruiting in zone 6??
This is getting to be like group therapy for those of us in the rotted P-stem club..............March is great , aint it?........
Wilson , welcome and your photobucket pictures were great. You're growing some of the same cool stuff ( Basjoo ,windmill palm) a lot of us Zone 6'ers are. You should post on the new members introductions and introduce yourself... lots of friendly growers here. |

I'm an optimist on trying to get fruit in these zone challenged areas also. I know it won't happen outside ..... but I haven't given up hope indoors with lots of lighting, warmth and humidity.... oh... and a fan! I've just described my spare bedroom. My children think I've gone crazy and my grandchildren think I'm cool. |

Re: Successful Fruiting in zone 6??
well, I didn't post anything last year, the winter knocked them clear to the ground, the musa basjoo grew to 8' and no flowers and died at first frost, however....I did cover them differently this past winter as I have been experimenting. I uncovered them 2 weeks ago and have a solid stem in ALL of last years plants at least 18: or more high and as soon as I uncovered them they started growing. I have them now under clear plastic for the "green house effect". My skimeneskises (sp?) has also survived with a solid stem, but my black thai is mush....I have however ordered a replacement if it don't come back....and if it does, ill make room for a 2nd. Pics will be coming this week.

Musa 2011 pictures by wilson1963 - Photobucket
I fenced them off last fall with 1x 1" mesh about 18" deep with shredded mulched dry leaves. We added 7-8 strands of icicle christmas lights on and around them and 2 60W lights and covered with a tarp. I added a "thermo cube" purchased at a farm store (google it), it turns the power on at 35 degrees and off at 40 degrees, it worked great. My stems were solid at top of leaves and very soon after uncovering them they started growing. My "greenhouse" in the pics was added with rebar and cheap swimming noodles, I left the 2 60 W bulbs for now. take a look: Musa 2011 pictures by wilson1963 - Photobucket |
