Default What potted bananas survived or did not survive this year?

Bananas must be left outside, unprotected.

In Zone 9, Northern California
It may be too early to tell. But if the plant is cold hardy at the pseudostem while potted, then it should have signs of growth such as leaf pushing out.

Here's what did not survive for me this year 2008:

Mauritius
Gran Nain
Little Prince

Here's what survived:
Enano Gigante
Goldfinger

But Mauritius survived last year's Arctic Blast of prolonged 20 deg F temperature, but it was under the eaves of the roof, next to a wall. This year, it was left under a deciduous tree, and it died.

My Musa laterita survived with no problem in it's pot. Our low was probably 30-32 F, zone 9 as well, but in SE TX. I also had a Dw. Cavendish and 'Burmese Blue' in pots that did great but I did move them into and out of the garage on the coldest nights just to make sure they made it. Oh yeah, also 'Thai Gold' made it just fine.

My 'Siam Ruby', 'Little Prince', and Dw. Namwah Pearl are all potted as well but spent the vast majority of the winter indoors.

All of my bananas survived that are planted in pots but they were semi protected in my backyard patio. As you can see they are now planted in my pergola plat. The only in ground bananas are the D. Brazilian and C Gold.
Come winter time again all will be planted on the ground. There are many more bananas that are not in the picture and they are now planted permanently all over my yard. But last winter they were in pots.

Thanks Bananaman88 and Bencelest!

If we can keep this list going, we should be able to have better assessment of what has worked through the years across various places.

OK These were all planted in pots last winter. And see those tags on the trees? They are grafts of different fruits.

Benny, that's good for you. I'm still negotiating with the wife to lose the lawn at the back, and am still on the losing end of the negotiation.

All of my potted bananas survived well except musa sikkimensis "darjeeling giant" wich hates indoor conditions, and a few "Musa formosana" wich also seem to hate dry air and indoor conditions.

The plant that has done best potted inside is Goldfinger and Dwarf Brazilian. Sabas did pretty well too, but got very spaghetti-like due to low/inadequate light.

All my potted bananas did real well this winter. All were kept outside all winter. I protected them on cold nights with 55 gallon black trash bags. As the black bags keep in the heat well. Most of my bananas are in ground. Ice cream showed not a single sign of stress from the cold nights. Kept growing all winter. Ice cream is by far the hardiest banana that i have ever grown.

I have about a couple dozen and am not going to list them all since it's not really significant since they were in a heated and lit shop. I have several Ae Ae, though, and was especially glad they survived! I haven't been quite brave enough to plant any of the potted bananas outside yet, maybe in 2-3 more weeks.

Thank you Steelviper, excellent idea on the trash bags, I'm out on 5 acres but I live in an alluminum (sorry about spelling) side double wide trailer, and I can't put nothing next to it, they will fry when the heat picks up, so they will be out in the field in the open. I've been slowly sitting them out to accustom them to our lovely California sun and well maybe I can get the Hua Moa to survive the winter with your lovely bag trick. ^_-

Potted indoors I have a dwarf cavendish and orinoco. Dwarf cavendish is doing really well but orinoco has very stunted growth.

Even though they are the cold hardiest, I would wait til the day temps are at least a continous 65 F and nighttime temps are at least a continous 50F before planting. I am waiting for more warm weather before I plant any of my bananas out here in zone 9.
