I will do the same - It will be especially cool if I have a dozen growing in a mason jar . . .

someone has to have some started somewhere stateside.

Eric from Leu Gardens has one sprouted, but last I heard it had not grown much beyond a small sprout. He's frequents this message board if you wanna send him a shout...maybe you guys can arrange something.

I ordered 100 of them from Vincenzo, zero of which sprouted after over a year. I gave up on them, and got 40 from Christian. I also got 10 more from Trebrown. None have sprouted yet, but Christian said that they can take some time. I have them in different temperatures also. Christian said that his sprouted at room temperature, or even cooler I think.

Sure would be nice to have a forest of them in my back yard!

Mine never germinated either, I planted about 40. I had one of an unknown one that was supposedly similar, but it died due to my mistake of not transplanting it soon enough. However, I think soon I will be growing Musa boman, another very large banana. There also are different forms of Musa ingens, some are getting to be over 30m (100ft+) in height.

It's too bad they won't grow in S. Florida.
They would surely be a hit.

I would love to have some in my yard.

my hope is that that they would do well in the cooler weather we have during the winter. but you're probably right that they wouldnt thrive down here. Musa basjoo isnt really happy down here either, but it still does ok.

There is no in depth research on it yet, but I think I have found out the basic problem of why these seeds will not germinate, unfortunately I still dont know how to solve the problem. My suggestion would be to try them out in soil inoculated with mycorrhizal fungi. There seems to be an association in the wild populations with mycorrhizal fungi and a symbiotic endophytic fungi within the seeds themselves. Again, I cannot provide any details because I do not know any details, and these statements have not been confirmed by any in depth research about the reproductive biology. But I know for sure there is a lot more going on within the seeds of this species than is known. Just planting them in soil is clearly not enough.

There is also the issue of that if these plants are ever produced, they require a very specific growing environment that cannot be met by most growers (they come from the highlands of PNG in a cloud forest). There have also been attempts to tissue culture the plants and they were unsuccessful. Im not saying it will never be available, but Im certain it will not be as simple to propagate and grow as other bananas if we could just get a few plants to start even.

The only thing I would be bummed about is if the seeds sprouted and then you plant it and the next thing ya know it's dead. That would be a nightmare!!! How hardy is it or do you not know since no one in this whole dang world has one.

its not that hardy likes temps in the mid 70s and 60s at night dosint like any vareation from thees temps it grows in a cloud forist in the PNG nere swamps so cold and wet really
