The best looking Ae Ae mat I've seen in So Cal is Andy's (BadPun) here in Ventura. He amended that bed like crazy, though I don't recall everything that he did. He also sort of treats the mat like a compost pile, piling on dead leaves, veggie scraps, etc., so there is lots of organic matter for those bananas. His Ae Ae are really big and very productive.

From what I've seen, you can place any banana in full shade, but they just won't grow as fast as if they had more sun. By not as fast, I mean some will grow incredibly slowly compared to their counterparts in full sun. I think there are some that might do best in dappled shade, like Ae Ae because the white parts of the foliage are less likely to burn. That said, they seem to do fine in full sun, at least in some climates.

For a long time I had a hard time understanding all the hype surrounding the AeAe. The pics that I saw on here all made them look no more special than a straggly long leafed hosta on a trunk. Then I saw a breathtaking clump in the greenhouse at the Knoxville Botanical Gardens: completely perfect leaves with beautiful varigation on about seven large plants surrounded by many perfect pups - and so many amazing and appetizing fruit bunches! Tony from your most recent pic it seems you are on you way to a similar outstanding specimen - Congrats!!

No picture can rely their actual beauty. I have 3 plants (actually 2 and one I bought for my mother) and each one has thier differences. They took a little beating a few days ago with the crummy wind/rainstorm we had here. But they even look nice with battered leaves.
