Re: Ae Ae Pup 5/6/2012
Sunfish,
Do you happen to have any of these ae ae banana pups for sale or trade? I'm one of the bigger bamboo collectors around, and I like the look of the variagated leaves on this guy. I know I probably can't get it too big in zone 6, but it still works well as a nice potted show plant. I do have some of the rarer bamboos around. Steve L

Re: Ae Ae Pup 5/6/2012
That's fine because I still need to wait until next summer to get divisions off my rare species of bamboo.
I'm just hoping that I have enough skill to keep one of these guys alive as I've had a hard time over-wintering bananas other than musa basjoo in the past, but I'm armed with a 400 watt metal halide I happen to have phyllostachys prominens, shanghai III, and moso bicolor bamboos, and intend to collect more rare species, or get seedlings to produce mutations in the future, but just for fun, I like collecting other plants too.

Re: Ae Ae Pup 5/6/2012
Tony, Nice specimen. My mom killed the AeAe you gave me when I was away, but I have one solid green pup from it. I'm going to let it grow. I don't intend to beat a dead horse as to whether or not the "Florida" variety is just an AeAe or not, but this is one I got from Thailand. Does it look like an AeAe to you? The picture doesn't show it well, but smaller leaf and the petioles are edged with bright pink. |

Re: Ae Ae Pup 5/6/2012
I don't understand where the negative feedback comes from. I have received Bananas from Bkinterplants, Thailandplant, and atgtree on ebay and they all survived and did well. I got this "Florida" AeAe from Bkinterplants. He always sends large corms with proper phytosanitary certificates through EMS express mail (3-4 days plus a couple days for customs). They take a while to come out of dormancy sometimes, but they always do well for me. Make sure you clean off all the fungicide, soak the corms in water, and dust with rooting hormone if bald. For some reason west coast customs likes to confiscate Plumeria, but they have never taken my bananas. $50-55 shipping may seem expensive But considering the cost of express shipping and the certificate as well, I think it's reasonable. Just make sure they include the phytosanitary inspection, this is important to ensure the plants are not diseased and confiscated.
