Ae Ae update
OK i don't want to jump to any conclusions but i think My Ae Ae may be in the process of blooming here is what happened to bring me to this conclusion first this plants best guess almost 3 years i got it from Scot last year in September at that time its corm was about 8" across and i thought then that it was pretty old so the other day we had a wind storm that took the lower leafs and bent them at the p-stem they were fairly old leafs from earlier this year and were in ruff shape even before the got bent any way so i cut them off then the plant just stooped growing all week long I assumed it was in shock although iv never see one go in to shock just from losing leafs but hey what do i know right? so on wed. it started to put out this leaf and so on and so forth but when the leaf looked to be about half way out it just stoped growing thats what mad me think for sure it was in shock then the leaf started to unroll its still like that but the leaf is standing strait up in the air so I'm thinking o grate its stuck and it may be at this point i don't know for sure but as if noted in the last couple of months the P-stem got allot thicker looking and really hard i some times check the firmness of the p-stems i just think a firm p-stem is a sign of good health so the leaf is standing strait up is only half the length of the last one ad it looks like its not doing any thing after pondering this curies change in it always reliable progress iv decided that maybe its time has come i feel a bit excited as this will be my first to Bloom but on the other hand i feel a bit down about it as my Boy friend tells me i have an unnatural attachment to this plant and i don't want any thing to happen to it and its a bad time of year as we only have 2 more months of good growing weather left but its in a pot and i can move it inside to protect it which i was planing on doing any way what do you all think? I will get a picture later as soon as the sun comes up and post it on this thread I'm so excited

Don't we all have an "unnatural attachment" to our favorite plants. They are our children after all! HA! HA! Can't wait to see the pictures! ~JaNan

Re: Ae Ae update
hear are the pictures the sad part is after the wind storm the plant is a mess
I'm not sure how good a fruiting its going to have and on top of that its only 5ft tall witch is weird to me as thees plants get to 20ft i know its in a pot but its a large pot at over 36" i don't remember how many gal that is but its a big pot i can barley move it so I'm sure its several hundred Lb now after looking at the pictures I'm just not sure whats up with it but you can clearly see the shortened leaf in the center how ever it looks to my like its not fully exsteded yet and since its not moving i dont know if its just stuck or if its a shorter leaf you all look and tell me what you think

Re: Ae Ae update
Looks like it could be the short leaf that grows just before the flag leaf comes out.
Mine bloomed at about 5 feet tall (PS) right after the arctic freeze we had in 2007, but then snapped in half because it was so skinny. On the bright side it did send several pups, although one of my cats broke most of them jumping down from the fence. |

Re: Ae Ae update
theirs no bloom as of yet its just a shorter leaf that cam out or is stuck I'm not sure which
well its defiantly not skinny the p-stem is at least 6" across and its vary firm but i don't see any marked swelling like something large is moving up the stem its just over all gotten much thicker in the last couple of months

Re: Ae Ae update
If it is a bloom, the fruit might not be the best quality because it is in a pot. So, even if it is premature, you could probably water with Miracle-Gro water-soluble fertilizer every time you water it from now on. This might help it grow quicker or make the fruits plump up better. I've never had a containerized banana bloom, so I can only guess what would work.

Re: Ae Ae update
Paul I am so excited reading about this!! I haven't been on in awhile and you have been a big bright spot in my stress level I'm in right now, facing 20 plus nanas to dig up outside this week plus other tropicals.
Having this happening in a pot is so exciting to me. Keeping my fingers crossed that you'll be peeling and slicing varigated nanas on your cereal. Unnatural attachment .... omgsh, we're all afflicted with that. |
