Ae Ae v.s. Florida Variegate - same or different?
Ae Ae v.s. Florida Variegate - same or different?
I recently returned to the UK from a business trip to Thailand with a leafless variegated bulb of “Ae Ae” and “Florida”, purchased from different vendors. I see there has been debate about whether these are the same clone, so the question I am posing is, “have I got the same plant and if not what are the differences”? Mine have no leaves (or roots) so it’s too early to see any differences. I am attempting to start both bulbs in a cheapie propagator “tent” on an electric heater mat inside a cool greenhouse, (see gallery photo). Any Ae Ae container growing tips please? |

maybe different. like my variegated is looking same with aeae. but we can not sure if just look they performance. the best way is conducting DNA test like RAPD, isozym etc. the question is who gonna do that?

Everything I have seen about them indicates that they are the same. None of the photos of 'Florida Variegated' I have seen convincingly indicate it is anything other than 'A'ea'e'. Even the name 'Florida Variegated' makes me think it's 'A'ea'e', because 'A'ea'e' is the most common variegated banana, and there's a lot of them in Florida, and so if you can imagine a grower in Asia acquiring some variegated banana plants from Florida and not knowing what they are....not saying its for sure, but its what the available info indicates to me.

I was under the impression that the Florida variegated produced an inedible fruit....Is that not the case?
