I too am crazy for AeAe. I was the one who purchased two 6 footers from that seller in SoCal. I drove down and picked them up. I have also purchased from the ebay seller in Hilo. They are really nice and have great plants. I will be in Maui for a week in November and then a week in Kona. If I see any that are cheap would you like me to ship one to you (or more)? I will be on vacation and plant shopping. Thanks for the Ele Ele info. I will stay away. Andrew

Re: aeae on ebay
The record price for an AE AE on ebay that I have seen was $388 for an 18" tall pup sold last year.

Re: aeae on ebay
Harvey,
Regarding Stokes and their lack of offerings of the Ae Ae, I spoke with them and they all told me they were plain worn out with regular internet sales and never had a chance to list any. They have been selling them regularly over their internet site and getting a good price for them. They still have quite a few, say a few dozen. On another matter, I am in a quandry about what to do about my fruiting Ae Ae, and my 8 footer in the ground. This nasty, unpredictable hurricane Gustav is giving me the creeps. If the storm continues on its present tract, I can expect 125mph winds sometime Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. I know the fruiting one will be crushed, the smaller 8 footer will probably take a hit as well. I can trim those leaves and possibly keep it from being knocked over but the fruiting one is history. They are not nearly at the ripening stage. I was hoping to taste the fruit this fall. It's probably got another month before ripening. I think I'll just cut it down right before the storm hits so that the mamma and its pups doesn't get uprooted. I hate this time of year. Steve |

Re: aeae on ebay
Andrew, if you can get them for $50 or less, I'll take 4 of them! I'd like to plant mine in the ground but, without a backup plant or two, it's staying in my shaded greenhouse for now! Your best bet for cheap plants are on the Hilo side (maybe south of Hilo).
Thanks, Harvey |

I'm really sorry to hear about Gustav thread. Obviously more so about personal safety but losing your fruiting Ae Ae would definitely be a shame. I guess it wouldn't be reasonable to spend resources to erect a very sturdy shelter in times like this. I'll keep you and everyone in the down in the southeast in my thoughts and prayers. Keep safe! |

Re: aeae on ebay
Steve! Don't do it! Can't you get some metal fence posts and stake all around the fruiting one and tie it off in several places? I know you've got to be bummed having already had Ae-Ae problems due to Rita back in '05, but I'd at least try to save it. Even if it does get uprooted and falls over you can do like Baninimal did and replant it and stake it. His Saba is still flowering.
I feel for you, buddy and will keep you and you're family in my prayers. I wanted to call you but I know you are probably trying to prepare. Please let us know how you are once the storm passes. It could turn yet! Keep praying! |

Re: aeae on ebay
Steve, if the leaves would get ripped off by the winds or cut off by your knife, I wonder if it might be possible to fold the leaves up and wrap them in a tarp in as small of a cylinder shape as possible. Then tie that contraption to a board or pipe and then support that to stakes with ropes or wires. Some leaves would be crushed, but probably no as bad as the alternatives. Maybe it's not worth focusing on the Ae Ae during times like this, but I'm thinking it might help since it would reduce the volume of area occupied by the plant. I transported a 9' California Gold from Joe Real's house to mine in June 2008 in the back of my pickup and we wrapped it white plastic (poly irrigation line used in my alfalfa fields). It survived and flowered two weeks later. Wind speeds were only about 65mph, though!
Be well, Harvey |

Re: aeae on ebay
Brent, Harvey,
Thanks for the kind words. I've been praying like mad and going to Mass early in the morning. I may have gotten a break with the latest forecast. The new track is more to the east. That could be good news for me. But good news for me means bad news for someone else and this storm is moving towards New Orleans. I hate this. I will decide in the morning what I'm going to do with the 2 in ground Ae Ae but my thoughts are to cut each of the leaves in half like Chong talked about on the smaller one and making another PVC support for the fruiting one on the opposite side on the existing support which would protect it from the north winds we will get being on the west side of the storm. That would give it a lot of support from two sides. The anxiety is enormous. Only those who have experienced this know. But, this is the price we Gulf Coast Southerners pay. Modern technology brings these storms into focus much sooner than when I was young. Watching each and every 6 hour update can be so nerve racking. I quit looking at it most of the day and worked outside to secure everything just to get my mind off of it. Thanks again guys for your advice and Brent, if you want to call, do so. I would love to talk. Steve |

Re: aeae on ebay
Steve - just had a thought! How about some WIDE diameter plastic pipe to slide over the whole plant from the leaves down to the ground. Then you could brace it with as many ties/ropes etc as you liked and it wouldn't cut into the plant. For the one with fruit - maybe cut a channel to slide each side of the fruit stalk and make a bigger opening where the actual stalk is. I know I know - the stores are closed now - sorry I didn't read this earlier. Good luck!
