Any experience with Hua Moa?
I was wondering if anyone had experinece growing Hua Moa aka "platano hawaiano" I've read that it's really not well suited to Florida, but then again I see people producing it.

Re: Any experience with Hua Moa?
I am growing it in the Houston area. I just planted it last spring, so this is its first winter here. It is doing well so far. Hopefully it will come through the winter OK. I'd love to get some fruit this year but it may be next.

Re: Any experience with Hua Moa?
Nick
My H M produced 14 pups last year. They sucked the life out of the mama and she fruited with only 20 naners. A big wind broke the flower stalk before they developed and it was all over for 2008. The follow on pup is tall and hefty right now and I hope it pops the flower when it's warmer. And yes, it's true, the "platano hawaiano" makes great tostones in taste and texture - if not the best. For now, I have to settle for the frozen HM's from Freshco mart - partially cooked and squashed. They are ok, but it's like eating frozen fish sticks compared to fresh caught fish. Still have a few potted pups if you are interested. Dan |
