Re: Banana Chain....
Not sure Vickie, but I sent you a few bananabucks to try the feature out and you should have something showing where someone donated bananabucks to you...

Okay I put 500 savings to try to get rid of this check thing by my banana bucks instead of donate. I am stressed. I hate it when things like this happen. I am leaving before I SCREAM. LOL! Night all.

Re: Banana Chain....
I like the idea a lot. I am looking for a few more varieties (you can never have too many). If you are new and don't have many varieties you could purchase small plants at many nurseries for under $20.00 and trade them for more interesting varieties. I had one member who wanted Misi Luki. I did not have it so I went and purchased it and traded it for a variety I didn't have. I also picked up a second and now have Misi Luki. It all worked out in the end. This could be fun.

As for the idea at hand, I have another suggestion--everybody that has a pup to trade submits their pups to a list. Once we have a list of available pups, we open it up for bids (banana bucks)--the winner gets first choice and is the only one that pays. The one he chooses from get the second choice, then the one he chooses from is third and so on. This way it doesn't get stalled waiting on someone to come up with a variety that nobody has or wants to part with. |

Re: Banana Chain....more obscure varities
This is a great idea and will promulgate some of the more obscure varieties and give everyone exposure/opportunities to try some more unusual bananas (if not now in the future as more members expand their collections = more available pups in the future).
I am looking forward to seeing what species are out there.... Kofi, Haa, Tuugia, etc., Like to see some of these: BANANA COOKING VARIETIES * BALONGKAUE - (pronounced ball long coo) is a cooking type, which grows about 12 ft. tall. The fruit has a bluish/green outer appearance, with white flesh. Is a very sturdy and attractive plant that can be eaten out of hand when very ripe. * CARDABA - A Philippine cooking variety that is a truly an attractive plant with a bluish hue to the fruit and very white pulp. The fruit is stubby and irregular in shape but can get quite large. Height 10-12 ft. * DWARF & TALL ORINOCO - Named from the region in South America near the Orinoco river where they grew profusely, they are also called the horse banana or "burro". These angulated cooking bananas are also a tasty treat out of hand when fully ripe. Their versatility make them popular in many regions of the world. Height 5-6 ft. dwarf & 12-14 ft. on the tall. * ELE ELE - A Hawaiian cooking variety that is known for its very dark pseudostem. Sometimes called the Hawaiian Black, it gets a purplish hue, especially in more acid volcanic type soil. Full sized fruit. Grows about 14 ft. tall. * HUA MOA - A Polynesian cooking banana that is short and stubby but packed with flavor. These make wonderful tostones and maduros as well as other banana recipes. The large full leaves and fat, rounded fruit make this a great looking plant. Height about 12 ft. * MAIA MAOLI - This 12-14 ft. tall plant of the Polynesian cooking variety has delicious flavor and statuesque elegance. It is mostly green with slight red colors in the pseudostem giving serious competition to the other cooking varieties. * MONTHAN - A cooking type from South India. Similar to the Bluggoe or Orinoco in size and versatility. Height about 10-12 ft. * PELIPITA - A dark green plant that grows about 10-12 ft. tall and produces a cooking banana that is angulated in shape. It is a hardy plant resistant to disease, which is why it is used as a progenitor for many other hybrids. * POPOULU - A 12-14 ft. Polynesian cooking banana with superb flavor. Its short stout fruit and dark green foliage make it a magnificent looking specimen as well as great tasting treat. * RED IHOLENA - This versatile variety is not only beautiful, with the underside of the leaves being a soft burgundy color, but also used for eating out of hand, dehydrating and cooking. The others in the Hilahila sub group of Polynesian cooking bananas include the WHITE IHOLENA & HA'A. The Ha'a is the shortest of the group and produces fruit that are yellowish from the onset, making it difficult to determine when to harvest. (Do not use color as the only indicator to pick your fruit). The White is devoid of the burgundy coloration but produces a similar fruit. All are excellent for a multitude of uses. (Heights: Red: 10-12 ft., White: 8-10 ft., Ha'a: 6-8 ft.) * SABA - The "sequoia" of the banana plants with huge pseudostem (range 12-24" diameter) and heights ranging from 16-20 ft. here, however clients have reported even greater heights in other areas of the country. The wonderful tasting cooking banana makes the best tostones we have ever eaten. A sturdy plant and somewhat cool tolerant. (A must for the collector). * KOFI - From Papau New Guinea, a member of the Iholena sub group which is a combination cooking-dessert banana that rated highest in the TREC tasting tests. * MAQUENO - A cooking banana from Ecuador, has a solid greet stout trunk with chubby 4-5 inch fruit. Height 12 ft. The plant is resistant to sigatoka and other diseases making it a good substitute in countries where this is a commercial problem. BANANA COOKING VARIETIES |

Re: Banana Chain....
Randy, I think this would be a fun swapping game for most of us. I think one rule must be that no one can ask for an expensive or very rare cultivar because this would bring the game to a halt. I suppose we would give a time limit of several days (or a week) for someone to respond. Otherwise, the person asking for such banana would have to change their wish to sometime else. Spring and summer would be the best time to get this going. I'm afraid it's too late in the season now. Just my thoughts about it. Cool idea!

Re: Banana Chain....
Like the ideas and still have lots of things swirling around in my head about this. Trying to make sure it works for the majority of folks. What about having two of them. One for more of the common bananas, and one for the more obscure varieties, like Chris suggested. This idea was actually intended to help expand available cultivars more than being a cheap source of common bananas. Do not want to exclude the new folks that do not have many varieties, but the more common varieties can usually be bought anywhere and are easier to find. I know I am going back and forth even in this post, and as you can tell, I have mixed feelings about it.
Okay, I would not be able to handle the two chains, but could handle the one. Would anyone be willing to work up the details and manage the chain for the more common varieties? If someone would take this on, I will start up the chain for the more experienced banana folks that are looking for the more obscure varieities... HELP, MY MIND IS EXPLODING!!!! |

Re: Banana Chain....
I agree with Randy
Several considerations: • We would like the contest to be available to the majority of the members. • As with any plant “exchange” one is required to have plants in order to participate in an exchange. • There have been/will be other contests for the members who are just starting out (and many members help others just starting out within their cities). • There are many reliable sources to purchase the more common varieties from for a reasonable price. • Not sure if the board has a Mission statement; but if it does or will I would imagine implicit or explicit within the Mission Statement would be to promulgate the “diversity” and “distribution” of many banana species. • In the long run everyone will benefit as the more obscure varieties will be more readily available. • I am not referring to the most rare (Ae Ae, Fei, etc.,) or those requiring the strictest of climates to thrive (Musa Ingens); rather some of the less common i.e. Haa, White Iholene, Pisang Jari Buaya, Kofi. Ele Ele. Etc., |

Re: Banana Chain....
Usually the plant trading sites have a Have and want list.. maybe something a little more sophisticated is in order i.e. a database tie-in of all the names of nanners and the people that have them and those that are looking for them.. sorta like a date matching idea.. i.e. you got's I wants... sorta idea.
maybe for the newbies they could trade tools, books etc for bananas etc.. just a thought..l |

Re: Banana Chain....
How do we get notified of contests and exchanges?
No I'm probably not ready to dive in just yet, since I have very little, only 3 types so far. I still would like to follow what is going on though...I'll live vicariously threw you all till I have something more worthy than Orinoco, Helen's hybrid and Velutina
