The pups are looking better now that they have emerged. The first pics were taken after I had pulled away the mulch, so at the time they were still underground. Here is an up to date pic of the pups after giving them a good sized dose of fertilizer.

What is that mulch your using? ... There appears to be a lot of white wood. If so this can cause problems down the road. I already see mushrooms growing in the pics.

The white is from some insecticide I put down, and those aren't mushrooms, it is granular soil acidifier.

Finally figured out the primary problem. The pups are healthy and growing fast with absolutely no blemishes, but the mother is still having issues. I cut the mother down a bit to clean out any insect infestation. Found stink bugs had made a nice home in there sucking all the juices from the new leaves and chomping on them as well.

One last update on this thread. Everything has recovered. I cut the mother plant to find if the rot was coming from the corm. Since then I discovered insects feasting on the leaves from the inside. After treating for insects everything has recovered. Pups are very healthy, growing faster than the mother. A 3rd pup has popped up last week.
