can someone tell me how big a pup has to be before i can break it lose from the mother stalk.or does it have to be so many many days old before i break it lose.

Usually people say, that it should make at least 5 real leaves (narrow, longer). That's when it is more than ready. Unless you have problems with space, I wouldn't remove the pup, it's good to have few on the mother corm.
