Default Banana for shade in Zone 7b/8a

I'm wanting a shade loving banana for the Dallas area (in ground preferably). It will get a bit of late afternoon sun but otherwise it's pretty much in shade. Any ideas?

musa basjoo will survive in shade, it will grow a little bit slower but thats not a problem for you i think because the summers are very warm in Dallas.

Two great possibilities for your zone are Musa yunnanensis and Musa itinerans. Both are very cold-hardy, and are naturally understory plants until they reach the canopy. Musa itinerans looks particularly elegant in shade. Musa mannii also looks best in partial shade, IMHO, and is very cold-hardy as well.

From what I've seen, most bananas will grow in shadier locations, but usually at the cost of growing much slower and (if edible) produce very reduced bunches. But if you're just looking for a nice foliage plant, I would first start to look based on what kind of leaves and flowers you may like and what kind of work you want to put into it. If its just foliage, M. basjoo would do fine, if you're looking for something to provide fruit, then the problem becomes the shade and not what variety you put in.
