Bananas around the house
Just some photos of banana plants growing around the house. Anyone else wanna share their adventures with indoor banana plants?
M. rubinea, M. 'Lavender Beauty', M. yunnanensis M. rubinea beginning to flower M. 'Lavender Beauty', has been flowering for about 6 months (slow winter growth) 10ft 'Saba' draping over staircase Another view M. laterita in the kitchen, post seed harvest (thus the absence of fruit) A terribly messy greenhouse! M. 'African Red' flowering for about 4 months

Great Gabe, to see flowering bananas in the house, do they get a lot of light?

Re: Bananas around the house
Yes, my house has lots of big windows and skylights so it's nice for growing plants.

Re: Bananas around the house
Nice pics, Gabe. Glad to see that African Red doing so well! As far as my adventures with indoor banana plants, I have a few in my cold garage this winter, waiting to get planted outside. Some of them are in the greenhouse on campus. And the rest are underneath the house! I dare not keep any plants in the house, unless they are completely out of reach of the cats. They love to eat houseplants!

Re: Bananas around the house
Gabe thanks for the pics. Is the Rubinea the red flowered one or have you got the orange flowered one.
I love the look of the Saba . Unfortunately we can't get that one over here. I am hoping that my Rubinea will flower this year. I found that they send up no end of pups .

Re: Bananas around the house
Amazing how much you have acomplished with minimal resources (in terms of climate that is). Colorado-state probably has nothing in common with bananas except "Colorado blanco".
Are your parents also into banana-growing? If not, they must be very tolerant! That Saba will take over the house any time :-) One thing I have noticed is that like me, a good deal of the members here come from cooler areas. In my case, banana-plants are part of my tropical daydream, and in the summer it comes alive. Kind of a way to get through the winters. You should be in sunny Florida, central America, or Puerto Rico, Gabe! I would imagine you will make Chiquita or Dole proud one day! Erlend

Re: Bananas around the house
I grew some 8 years ago up in connecticut down in the basement. I hung some flourescent lighting and they did surprisingly well. I found spider mites to be a problem, but Concern brand is absolutely the best for eradicating spider mites..

Re: Bananas around the house
Here's a pic of my office mate "Bob":
Bob is 1 1/2 years old now, brought in as a wee pup off my dwarf cavendish at home. He has almost 2 feet of psuedostem now and a base diamater of about 4". People in the office are amazed at how big he's gotten. They say one day they'll come in and I'll be devoured! Bob now has a buddy, a pup I brought in off a raji puri. He's growing by leaps and bounds too. Lot's of fun! |

Re: Bananas around the house
Lol - yes Bob is a slob, just like his owner! He should be happy. He's got a SW facing window with a nice view from the 3rd floor, and fertilizer with every watering. And now he has a playmate - Bob Jr.

Re: Bananas around the house
Update - "Bob's" Mom is giving birth!!!
I'm counting around 50 bananas so far. I wasn't sure what I was going to get as I live in a pretty mild climate near the beach and growing in a container. Not sure what variety this is. It was just labeled "banana" ar the nursery. I figured it was a Dwarf Cavendish, however the psuedostem is only 3.5 feet tall, which seems a little short for a DC. Whatever it is, I couldn't be more jazzed!!! |
