Bananas, etc. from TPIE Show.
Here are some pictures of plants that I got at thr recent TPIE Show.
First, we have Ensette Glaucum. [IMG][/IMG] Next, we have Gran Nain, the grocery store banana. [IMG][/IMG] Here is (what will become the colorful) Zebrina. [IMG][/IMG] The cold hardy Basjoo. [IMG][/IMG] And finally, not a banana, but an Elephant Ear, Colocasia Thai Giant. [IMG][/IMG] |

Nice, John! What does TPIE stand for? I remember you saying you were going down to Florida, but that was about it.

Re: Bananas, etc. from TPIE Show.
It was a really good show this year. I was glad to see Ensete glaucum put into TC. Its the best Ensete for here.

Re: Bananas, etc. from TPIE Show.
Eric, I agree, it was a pretty nice show, and the weather, for the most part, was pretty good too. A little showery one day, and a little cool (light jacket) a couple of times, but otherwise beautiful. The pictures of the plants were taken on the patio, outside my hotel room. How's the weather treating you, at Leu? (For other readers, Leu is Leu Botanical Gardens, in Orlando)
When I was leaving for Florida, on the 18th, I looked out the door, at 2:00 AM, and it was snowing. By the time my ride to the airport arrived, it had changed to ice pellets. It later turned to rain, but that was after I was gone. At the airport, after several delays, and one gate change, we finally got off 3½ hours late. Then the plane had to be deiced, which took another half hour. The plane was only about a third full. When I expressed my surprise to another passenger, he said that some people had gotten on an earlier flight, but only those who had carry-on baggage only. When we arrived, I went to claim my bag, and it didn't show on the carousel. Then I noticed a roped off area, alongside, with some bags in it, and one of them looked like mine. I had to get an employee to get it for me, and I asked him why it was there, he said that it had come in on an earlier flight. My bag got on the earlier flight, but I couldn't! Coming back we were only an hour and a half late, due to traffic at destination. (Newark) It snowed a little that night, after I got home, (Tuesday, the 25th) and we got this:[IMG][/IMG] Then, last night, we got dumped on with what looks like about another 2 feet. [IMG][/IMG] My trash cans. [IMG][/IMG] A general shot of the yard. Dean, some of the plants came from Agri-Starts, but not the Basjoo. 1aday, most of the plants will be sold. The prices, for .org members, will be the same as on the Agri-Starts price list which are: Musa basjoo $1.50, Ensete glaucum $1.50, Musa Gran Nain $1.50, Colocasia Thai giant $1.50, Musa zebrina $0.90. If any member wants any of these, you can buy as many as you like. There is no surcharge for buying less than a full tray, and there is no freight from Florida to here. The only shipping expenses would be from here to your location. I don't however, know when I would be able to send any, with this weather. I dont want them to freeze, on the way. Re: Bananas, etc. from TPIE Show.
I've always wanted to get down there for that show but never have.
I sent you a PM. Your snow looks pretty but also kind of awful, you really got dumped on! The garbage cans photo says it all!

Re: Bananas, etc. from TPIE Show.
Yeah, the snow is kinda pretty, and certainly awful, and now they're talking about a possible repeat performance next week.
To all of those who sent PMs: I will get to replying within the next day or so. Thank you. |

Re: Bananas, etc. from TPIE Show.
My hubby and I flew down. Then we took a couple of days and drove to Key West in a rental car and drove back up to Ft lauderdale the long way through the Miami/Homestead area and went driving through the country/nursery area. Man do I live in the wrong place! I did notice that there are more bananas usually in my yard than most in Florida...lol..
Beautiful palms down there. Couldn't believe the Manuel Diaz palm nursery...wow...

Re: Bananas, etc. from TPIE Show.
We did the Key West bit, a couple of years ago. The only difference was that we drove down and, at the end, we turned the car in there, and flew home from KW. The big jets don't go to Key West, so we had to take a 19 seat turboprop to Tampa, and change there.

Re: Bananas, etc. from TPIE Show.
We did kind of a "nursery crawl" on the way back through the country all around Homestead. I need to fly down one way and rent a truck one way and get a load of palm trees. I especially like the dwarf pygmy date palms, and when we saw those at OFA last year, I thought then that I could probably sell a few of those around here in the spring. I'm kind of liking papayas for this next year too.
