![]() Many of us purchased the Musa Black Balbisiana - Thai Black plants through Rare Bananas in the Spring of 2008. I'm curious to see how everyone's mats are progressing. Mine floundered most of the first season. I then dug it up and grew it in a pot for the 2009 season. I replanted in a good spot this spring with great success. My main plant has 9' of black pseudostem plus 5 pups. What say you, merry growers?

![]() OK Bastards
![]() The first pic is of Musa "Black Balbisiana" on the right with Musa "Saba" on the left. Balbisiana is sitting at 9' with Saba at 8'. Both are pupping out and really throwing out leaves. Both were in 7 gallons pots over last winter. After planting out in April, it took about a month before the roots grew enough to support good growth. After that, they've been growing like gangbusters. ![]() Here are the pups that Balbisiana have produced. Aggressive. ![]() Here's the black coloration of the leaf petioles for Balbisiana. ![]() And here's the very green leaf petioles of Saba. ![]() |

![]() Did these start the season at the same size? The "black" would be much darker in more sun.

![]() I had them in a shaded green house over the winter. Only the new growth shows the good black coloration. It was probably 5-6' when I put it out in April. Saba was probably 4-5'.
