Broke the green off? Worried!
I am brand new to the banana tree challenge, and received 2 bare root Goldfingers in Monday afternoon's mail. While planting these in a couple of 8-inch pots while I wait for warmer weather (mid Michigan!), I broke the green central growth off from the pseudostem, but did not damage the pseudostem itself. Is my tree at risk? I know I can't cut the stem, and I know I can cut the leaves back, but can the leaf whole "body" be broken off and still recover?

Re: Broke the green off? Worried!
Sounds like you broke off the newest unfurled leaf. No worries, it will continue to grow out.

Re: Broke the green off? Worried!
Thank you!
I have worried about this since I damaged this tree yesterday morning, and I am pleased that I can continue forward with these babies. I think I see some green pushing up from the pseudostem, but I cannot be sure it is not just wishful seeing. |

Re: Broke the green off? Worried!
That's the bottom of the leaf you broke off. Basically your just going to have one rather short leaf after it completely unfurls.

Re: Broke the green off? Worried!
Mitchel,
It has taken a bit over a week to be sure I wasn't experiencing wishful seeing, but the tree with the broken off "green" is pushing new growth through the pseudostem. Thanks for the reassurance. |
