Question Broken Basjoo

I received a Basjoo pup the other day and potted it up,...beautiful plant and all was well. This morning, the container had been knocked over--presumably by the cat --and the pup had been broken. No more leaving it on the patio table!! I'm now wondering if it will grow back. Or should I scrap it and get another one?
Thanks!

Just you wait a little bit, it might grow. I have experienced such thing happening on my small Tissue Cultured plantlet which was producing a tiny pup below the soil level at that time. But it depends upon how large the corms are and if they are starting to pup. I also have something that was cut in half at the pseudostem and it never came back, could be that the corm is too tiny to sprout a small pup. So my advice is just wait. If after two weeks nothing, then it is good for the compost heap. But if you can't wait two weeks and the price is right, you can go ahead and order.

The person I received it from told me that it actually did have 2 very small pups of it's own before he gave it to me, but he removed them. The pup that was broken was around 18" tall when it took a dive. I'm very new to bananas so I know there is MUCH to learn. I appreciate and welcome any and all responses.

It is broken off completely? I am kind of suprised that it would break off like that just from being knocked over. Anyway, I would wait too. I am a real optimist when it comes to plants though. I can plant things that look half dead saying, "You never know it might come back", lol, sometimes they do. I imagine if there were two pups before that the plant had a pretty good corm on it.

I got a small TC plant about 2 weeks ago that was about pencil thick and 8" tall. For some reason, it decided to split the stem and send a leaf out the side. I wacked the whole thing off leaving a 4" stub and now it is coming straight out the top. Like was mentioned in another thread, you can cut a banana off straight across and the next leaf or so will gome back right out the top. I'd bet if you trimmed your broken part off just below the break, it will come back just fine. Unless it is teeeeeny tiiiiiney.

Well, I did say it was knocked over, but it was actually knocked off the table. I am going to wait and see what happens with it. No sense in tossing it out when there might be a chance of recovery. I went ahead and cut just below the break so now we'll wait and see.

I bet by tomorrow, you will have a little 1/8-1/4 inch tall stub in the middle of that cut. They are amazing. I did that once with an Ae-Ae, wacked a 12" tall plant in half and a few weeks later, you would have never known it.

Keep us posted.

Smile Re: Broken Basjoo

Highly amused by the principle of "WACKING" a banana plant in half etc .. Ha Ha.
Never wacked one myself must try it one day.!!
If your plant misbehaves just wack it.
Get the banana police on board.....hey guys its the weekend (Bank holiday in England")
Best regards .

Cohiba, the cat will tell you he didn't do it. But you know all cats are liars, LOL!

You will read again and again how abuse-tolerant bananas are. I have dug up whole mats and transplanted, thinking I got the whole thing. Only to have several pups spring up from the old location. I have also received some pitiful looking plants by mail that surprised me by bouncing back with a vengeance.

Terry, I hope you guys didn't send that damn Katrina towards us. We've had enough this year too! I don't wish 'em on anybody, but ... What ever happened to hurricanes hitting Mexico and Central America?

A lot of people around here still have their plywood up from Dennis.

Hey Bananavilla - nice ear tufts!

Almost looks like my Maine Coon. I have 5 total (for now) but Remy (the 22-lb MC) prefers lounging inside the cool jungle of my main banana mat. Funny behavior for a cat with such thick fur in the deep south!

By the way, Remy says DOGS are yummy!

Well,......it happened. It started growing. There is about a 1/4" protrusion in the center of the plant. I sure thought when it happened that it was a goner. Now I know first hand that these plants can take a lot of abuse.

Yeah, tough little buggers. In a few weeks, you won't even know it happened.

Glad it worked.

This illustrates the importance of the root system vs. leaves on banana plants. Especially on T.C.'s, you just can't disturb the root zone too much or they go into a major state of shock. But whack the top and they shal return.
