Re: Chiquita fined 25 million
It's sad that they need to pay off the guerrillas to keep their workers safe from harm, but is it any surprise?

Re: Chiquita fined 25 million
There is absolutely nothing funny about this. Companies like them are literally held hostage by terrorists everywhere. They are caught between a rock and a hard place.

Re: Chiquita fined 25 million
Sadly, this is very common in many countries - "advance commissions" etc.

Re: Chiquita fined 25 million
Yes, it is not uncommon to extract money to those who can afford them.
In the Philippines it is not unusual if you are rich to receive a black envelope from subvergient organization which are usually anti government asking for donations monthly or annually otherwise they will hurt your children, family or relatives.

Re: Chiquita fined 25 million
The only thing I can see is that people will say now to boygot Chiquita and that will only make things worse because then no money will be going into that region.

Re: Chiquita fined 25 million
I don't know why anyone would ask to boycott a company that is being blackmailed by terrorists and for trying to protect thier employees. That would be like shunning parents that pay a ransom for their kidnapped child. If you read the article, you'd find that Chiquita sold their Columbian interests. Shall we continue to punish them? Come on! Why not walk a mile in their shoes?

Re: Chiquita fined 25 million
Remember that the money paid by Chiquita does not go to the workers or the village people but to a group that 'protects' the village.

Re: Chiquita fined 25 million
Yes! So that the terrorists do not harm the workers or their families and the plantation that the families relied on for their livelihood. They could just have opted to ignore the terrorists and call their bluff. You know the catastrophic results that would have resulted. They already paid a price - to the terrorists and now to the government. And they left Columbia. Now would you want to still boycott them???
