Default Did I make a dire mistake?

Found viente cohol (1 with 3 pups) and a dwarf green when down in Cocoa. Price was $7.50 per plant. Trying desperately to not acquire more greenery until I'm settled, I was very good and kept my card in my wallet; hey, I even turned down anything not immediately edible from the friends I visited. (I brought home collards I haven't a clue how to cook so handed them off to my neighbor and asked for a taste; I've never had them.) Along with the bananas was a Sunshine Blueberry in bloom. I can ask my friend to go shopping for me...should I?

I'm glad you were able to resist the urge.

I couldn't, 7 days ago at Lowe's they had 5 veinte cohol and 3 dwarf green all of them were $7.98.
I brought the biggest one with a 17" p-stem and two pups I immediately put it in a 7 gallon pot so I can keep it inside when it gets cold.
It's outside and it's growing very fast the p-stem is green and black with brown markings the petiole margin are erect and spreading and not clasping the p-stem.

Just because I knew it was safe, I stopped at WM to see if they had bananas. Nope. (I didn't dare drive to Lowes or HD though it would probably have been safe because all they sell in this area are DCs.)

Sticking with the "it has to be edible or I'm not bringing it home" theme, I found baby bananas at the market (finally) and picked up .39 lbs or 5 tiny fingers to taste. They're bright yellow but not soft. Are they ripe?

I got burned twice by those little niño bananas at supermkts. All tasted lousey due to refrigeration before ripening naturally. Try one. If acidic wait a day or 2.

Hmmmm....my reply went nowhere....

Ate one. Understand that I'm a fan of green plantains (cooked) and quite firm, under ripe bananas on rare occasions so I thought it was pretty good. Accustomed to "Chiquitas", I was not expecting a battle to unsheathe it; those little fingers have a pretty tough hide which is probably why the 2" long black "bruise" didn't show up inside. Taste, of which I'm no judge, is not why I'd grow or purchase them; I happen to be a fan of tiny fruits/veggies. IMO people who like regular bananas would like these also.

Yeah! Be forewarned I'm not your typical female shopper. Clothes bore me; I wear shoes only as required so style isn't a factor. Groceries? Love investigating little obscure markets. If I spot a hole in the wall eating place with a full parking lot, that's where we'll dine. Tools? Building supplies? I'm there. Plants? Need you ask?

If we were single and lived close; we would be friends.
I do not understand style. At home no shoes. I do yard work barefooted. I've only striped a toe once with the weed eater. Lawn mower, rotor tiller no problems. I do have a pair of shoes when I need to push a shovel. Off property, Berks, unless it is wet. I have a pair of shoes for rainy days and when there is fresh snow.

Love the places my wife call "greasy spoons" Eating places that are not part of a chain are very hard to find any more.

Here's an update on the banana plants that lowes sell for $7.98 each. In the past week I've went to two different lowes the first one is selling Veinte Cohol the first 2 images are of Veinte Cohol there's 21 banana plants. The next group of images were taking at another lowes and they have Mysore, Pisang Raja, Kandarian, Veinte Cohol and Dwarf Cavendish all together 32 banana plants. All of them look healthy with p-stems starting at 7" and bigger ones at 20".

I'm in Cocoa; where are you? Surely you'll have some pups to spare if I ever find a place to plant things. BTW, I looked at a horrible little house today--I absolutely hated it. Meandering mess of addons and such done very poorly. (Hey, if even this female can spot the out of plumb ceilings and the dipping floors then you know it's bad. Frame house in FL--'nuff said.).

Surprisingly the agent and my companion thought it was great. (Hello? New roof needed, tiny lot and paneling everywhere including the ceilings!) But next door lived a kindred spirit. 3 papayas in fruit, a healthy mango and oodles of banana plants--most small and newly planted. I was tempted but the house? Nope. (I need to take paper besides receipts with me so I can leave notes for potential new members to this forum.)

When you're ready I will see what's available. The wholesaler is in central Florida, it's just a matter of time before you see these banana plants in your lowes store.

Perhaps. I have found much more variety here than in Jacksonville where they have nothing except sometimes a DC. However, I'm ready to drive back there just to pick up citrus from a licensed guy in Middleburg. His prices are less than 1/3 of here where tomato plants sell for $2 to $3 a piece. Not big ones but just Styrofoam or Beer cup babies. Legally you need a license to sell plants here; I'm all about legal. But the restrictions and price are nothing compared to up north. (Selling veggies requires registration but no fees.) I honestly don't understand why, in a perfect growing zone (which means no greenhouse or Herculean efforts to ward off the cold) even annuals are so expensive. Put a seed in a cell filled with decent dirt and it happens. I saw the same stuff in the Virgin Island when I was there on business in the 80s. Makes no sense to me but I hope to cash in on that at some point.
